Question:
When can I eat fruit after WLS?
I LOOOVE fruit, especially the summer melons, grapes, pineapple. They're so high in sugar, though my nutritionist says fruit sugar is a little different. How soon after surgery can I eat what? Thanks! — jen41766 (posted on August 2, 2002)

Jennifer, My doctor says we can have canned fruit (except pineapple) at 2
weeks, and all fresh fruit (including pineapple) at 6 weeks. We are healed
and functioning enough by then to take care of a lot of the fibrous stuff
in them then. Happy eating!!!

My suggestion is just try a small bite and see how you do.
Your body will tell you how much, and what it will tolerate.

I would like to apologize for some previous postings today. I did not
realize that in posting the same repeated posts on some of the questions
would show up so many times here in one place. (This was about my recipe
book). Again, I'm very sorry for all the duplicate messages.

I was told not to eat any fruit with pulp (oranges, grapefruit) ever
because the pulp can get caught in the pouch. I was also told to avoid
apple peel because we can't digest it. Other than that, all fruit is fine
according to my nutritionist.

My surgeon allows me to eat any fruit except bananas. Bananas are VERY
high in calories and sugar. I love melons, plums, oranges, tangerines,
pears, nectarines, grapes and apricots. I do peel grapes and plums because
I got a piece of grape peel hung up in my pouch and was very ill for about
18 hours til I finally threw it up. Won't make that mistake again. I
couldn't eat fresh fruit til I was six weeks post-op.

as you can see, many different drs, many different eating plans. here's
mine: no fruit for the first year after surgery to maximize weight loss
during the "window of opportunity";.after one year, in
moderation. fruit sugar is still sugar is still carbohydrate. my plan is
70% protein, 30% vegetables of the low carbohydrate variety for the first
year. fruits and simple carbs are added in small amts after that. i am only
5 months post op and have lost 70 lbs. on this regime. i was also a
"lightweight". ps: this doesnt mean i dont cheat once in a
while:) i had a tree ripened peach this summer for breakfast one
day..........heaven.

I remember my surgeon giving us a guide that had canned fruit in its own
juice at week 4. I started having fresh fruit, cantalope, pineapple, pears
right after that. By 8 weeks or so out, I was trying watermelon (very
sweet), peaches and nectarines and by 3 months post-op I was trying grapes
and cherries too. I've read where some post-ops get sick on fruit sugar,
but I haven't. What does happen, tho, is I get filled up very fast on
fruit! Take it slow initially until you know how you handle fruit.

Hi Jennifer ~ I am almost 4 months out and have literally survived for a
few days, only on fruit & my protein drinks. I don't know what I would
have done without my fruit - I've tried all kinds and some work better than
others. I can't keep down any with peeling - if I eat a peach, it's
peeled. Not too many things have worked for me post op - it's a test &
go type of thing, no doubt about it. I took one bite of my daughters candy
bar the other day and dumped like crazy...I WILL NEVER EAT ANOTHER BITE OF
CHOCOLATE AGAIN...well, at least for a long while but fruit, well that's a
different story. Like I said - I wouldn't have had anything to eat at all
during some days if it wasn't for my fruit - I've been eating it since week
7 and it goes down and stays down well. Good luck to you.

I'm with you.. I love melons! I could survive on melon and berries only
for the rest of my life if I were allowed. I have been eating cantelope
since about 3/5 weeks. I ate just one or two cubes at first.. now I eat a
few more. I try to have it only every other day because its still a carb.
The only things I avoid are skins and seeds. I was eating a little bit of
peach at 3 weeks as well.
