Question:
All the protein powder I have is flavored, but I'm wondering if....

Has anyone tried using unflavored whey protein to fortify food with extra protein? I'm wondering if it'd add taste to a scrambled egg or not. Maybe added to mashed potatoes if that's the only thing that will stay down.

I haven't heard it mentioned by anyone, so maybe it wouldn't work.
Sandi — goodgal (posted on August 2, 2002)

Hi Sandi, I'm no expert on protein supplements (maybe Michelle Curran will answer you) but I think that I read that protein loses it's potency if it is warmed or cooked. It would be wonderful to be able to add it to foods so I hope that you get some good answers. Good luck!

Yes. The near tasteless protein I use is Procel and it can be added to mash potatoes or other foods. Only 5 gms. of protein but helps to get in extra protein when needed. It can be ordered through vitalady.com

hiya! i have an answer for you and it has changed my view of protein powders!! i use jarrow's formula iso rich isoflavones soy protein powder that i get online from www.vitamintrader.com for $25 for a 2# container... it has NO flavor, tho is a little chalky so when i mix it in my coffee i just keep stirring it before i swallow...it took only a few days to get used to it tho BIG THING IS THAT YOU CAN COOK WITH IT!!! i've tried two other brands that you could supposedly cook with (genisoy and trader joe's) and they were horrid -- turned my coffee to the consistency of slimy oatmeal!! ick!! the jarrow's brand has 25g protein/2 tbls with NO sugar, NO fat, NO carbs and only 110 calories! last night i mixed it in with the ricotta mixture of my lasagna, i add it to casserole, mashed potatos, stir fry, soups...you name it, you can do it! i haven't tried it straight in scrambled eggs but i think that if you add a little water and mix really well it should be fine... i HIGHLY suggest the jarrow's formula!! good luck, kate

Your answers seem promising! :) I found I'm allergic to soy. But I did make some bread type things with geni soy while on Atkins diet. But it also worked with whey protein powder. Not sure about the heat hurting the protein.... but we do cook meat, *LOL* and in my calorie and carb book it has the same protein cooked or raw.
Maybe I'll experiment a little with cold stuff that is sweet. Like adding some to low cal pudding, etc. Thanks for the ideas. :)
Sandi
