Question:
Protein Question - Pro Cal 100
Hi. I just tried a new protein shake and it was actually GOOD! Can you believe it? It's called Pro Cal 100 and is made by a company called R Kane. Each shake has 100 calories and 15 grams of protein. My question is this - the protein it contains is Casene (sp? maybe casiene). The way it was explained to me is that whey protein is made from the liquid that forms on top of milk curds and casene protein is made from the curds themselves. Is this still an acceptable protein? They tell me it has no lactose intolerance issues. Michelle Curran - if you're out there, or anyone else, what do you think? I hope it's acceptable because it tastes better than anything else I've tried! Thanks! — ronascott (posted on July 24, 2002)

Hi Rona! Thank you for answering my posts! I had the opportunity to try Pro
Cal 100 and believe it or not, I was planning to suggest to the members on
this site that it would be a good choice~~I didn't say, excellent, but
good~~supplies the basic need for protein. I used Pro Cal 100 when I was
going to a bariatrician in Columbus, GA., before considering WLS. As a
matter-of-fact, I'm having the mushroom soup for lunch today. Put it in the
blender. The shakes come in orange, vanilla, chocolate, I think strawberry
as well. The beverages come in peach mango, pineapple and a few other
flavors. To me, as long as it says on the label, "protein" 15gm,
I believe it's okay. I personally didn't have ANY negative experiences with
Pro Cal 100. I especially liked it because you could also use it as
pudding!! YYYUUMMMYYY!! I liked the chocate pudding better, but if you get
vanilla, you can add different flavoring extracts and be creative for a
change. Butterscotch, black walnut, choices are endless! The soups are
chicken, tomato and mushroom. I know the mushroom is 15gms of protein in an
0.80-oz packet. R-Kane Products is located in Pennsauken,New Jersey 08110.
If anyone gets the telephone number or find it on the web, please let us
know. Hope this helps you, Rona!
If I can get my PCP or somebody to write a 'script for me, I'd use it to
get a few pounds off before surgery. I don't believe you can get it without
a prescription. If you can, I'd like to know where in Georgia. I'd be
interested in what Michelle Curran might add :).

I've heard of it, yes. Casein is not a high BV protein, but it will
deliver some. It doesn't have all the properties of whey, such as
rebuilding skin, muscle & suppressing appetite, but it would provide
the very basic protein needs if you took lots. Like if you were shooting
for 60g, take 75g? Casein is "spent" quickly, so it doesn't give
sustained satisfaction like a good blended whey.
