Hi: My open RNY will be this coming Thursday (7/18/02). I take glucovance (oral) for type II diabetes. This is my one major wish after surgery: to get off all medication for diabetes control. I also have high blood pressure. I am 42 years old, weight 275, and am hoping to be down to at least 200 by Christmas. Would love to have an email penpal. My email is [email protected] chris

I'm willing to be your e-pal. I'm a Type 2 Diabetic who is currently insulin-dependent - 3 shots a day. My open RNY is scheduled for Sept. 12. I was told by my surgeon that I'll very likely be able to discontinue my insulins immediately after surgery! Reach me from my Profile page.

I had open RNY on 2/22/02. Before that i had type II diabetes which I took oral medications for...I was very close to being put on insulin. I have not had to take any diabetic medications since the day I had surgery. The surgeon told me to take my glucophage only if my blood sugar goes above 200...and it has not been anywhere near that since before surgery. Feel free to email me anytime with any questions you have or just to chat.

Hi! I was a Type II Diabetic prior to my open RYN surgery on 9/22/00. Was on Gluophague and Avandia twice a day prior to surgey. Have been off all medication since the day before surgery. Doing FANTASTIC! My sugar counts are now so normal that I can no longer be considered a diabetic. I was a month short of 57 when I had the surgery and had the diabetes for about four years prior to surgery. All the medication just caused me to gain more weight. The only medication that controlled it was Resilin and once they showed the studies on the liver damage, my doctor took me off of it. I've lost just about 100 pounds but more importantly, my sugars are now in control and so many of my other problems have disappeared as well. Hope this helps - if I can help, let me know.

Janet: I had WLS on 11-8-01 and have lost 90 lbs. I still take 4 insulin shots a day as I am a type I diabetic. I have been told that I do not produce any insulin. I used to take 70+ units a day and now take 20-30 units on a sliding scale. If you have any questions, please let me know. I would be happy to answer them. WLS is the best thing I have ever done for myself even though I still need insulin shots. I still have another 28 lbs to lose, but I feel and look pretty good. Much better than before...
