Question:
Can I be at a plateau this early at only 4 weeks post-op?
I'm just about 4 weeks post-op (on Thursday) and I've lost 40# so far. The scale has only gone down 1 pound in a week, and I am afraid I have hit my first plateau. Can this be? Isn't it way too early? What should I do? Thanks so much, I'm so bummed out! :( — Kelly C. (posted on July 1, 2002)

Kelly,
Yes, you have hit the first of many plateaus to follow. The first one
usually hits at about 3 weeks and can last for several weeks. You are
doing great though, and in no time, the scale will continue to move down
again.

hi. 40 pounds is great, congrats to you! I am 4 weeks post-op, too! I
thought I lost 35 pounds from my scale, then i went to the doc and he said
only 30, so i was bummed (i also ate before and had shoes on) But i have
only lost like 1 or 2 pounds this week as well. i also haven't started
exercising yet, besides waitressing, so I know I am at fault there, but i
am in pain due to muscles spasms and a chronic migraine illness. But i
think if we put it all aside, we are both doing great! Look at you- 40
pounds lost forever- GOOD FOR YOU!! :) Just keep up your protein and
fluids!!

I am 2 1/2 weeks and I think I am on a plateau already (that is if my scale
is right). I had already lost 18 pounds. I'm not sweating it. Just
figured it was because I started eating more "real" food and its
a natural thing for our bodies to do. Hang in there.

40 pounds in 4 weeks...totally cool...just remember they say the average is
20-25 pounds a month for the 1st 2 months and then 10-15 pounds a month
after that.
I had lost 21 pounds in 2 weeks and then 0 for 1 and 1/2 weeks...at my 6
week check up I had lost 38. Your body is adjusting to the rapid weight
lost......Don't worry.

*$%# Plateaus! I hit my first plateau from weeks 4-7. I still lost around
8 pounds in the 3.5 week period. But it was discouraging because I had
been losing a pound a day. I significantly upped my protein, water intake
and started walking Every day and that pesky plateau went bye bye (well,
until my next one). I'm just being extra strict with carbs so it's not
inclined to happen again so soon. (p.s. I was bummed too but it will pass
soon enough and you'll be on your merry way again in no time!) 8.5 weeks
post-op and down 52 pounds. :o)

Well, by week four I had been on 3 plateaus, if you want to call me gaining
5 pounds the four days I was in the hospital after the surgery a
"plateau". I was down 20 pounds. I am now on week 6, have had
another plateau induced by my monthly friend but down 27 pounds. It is
cool if you post your weight daily on www.fitday.com -- it will show you
exactly where your plateaus are and how it all "washes out" at
the end of the month. This is very reassuring... I see that I am on a
plateau, but I also see that the last time I came off one I lost 4 pounds
in 3 days.
And yes, I am a little envious that you have lost 40 pounds so far. And a
little amazed that you would be bummed with a 10 pound a week average loss!
Keep your perspective and if the scale is not reflecting your efforts,
hide it for a week. Congrats on the weight loss.
