Question:
Suggestions for sources of protein? I don't eat red meat..
I have been eating chicken. I have also been eating cheese and peanut butter, but I know those are high in fat. I don't particularly like sugar-free yogurt or cottage cheese. I also don't care too much for fish and eggs make me nauseous. Any other ideas? Thanks. — sheltie (posted on June 18, 2002)

My best source of protein was shrimp. You can eat it with cocktail sauce.
Not real expensive considering you can only eat 1/4 pound per meal or about
2 bucks worth. Taste good, loaded with protein, no sugar, no carbs, no fat.

Protein shakes. Keep trying them until you find one that you like. Most
pack around 30 grams per serving. Good luck and God Bless!

Protein shakes are the best source I've found. The kind I use gives me 44
grams in one easy serving(2 scoops). I have that first thing in the
morning. At the end of the day I evaluate how much protein I've eaten. If
it is inadequate I have a 1 scoop "snack" in the early evening.
I'm not a big fan of tofu, but my brother, who is vegan, uses it in
hundreds of recipes from smoothies to tacos. I do love all kinds of legumes
and often make a big pot of soup in my crock pot. I make a delicious
meatless split-pea soup that uses a little smoke flavoring to get the
flavor usually given by smoked meats. Yum! I think I'll start a pot right
now!

What about ham? Deli meat? If cottage cheese doesn't TOTALLY gross you out,
try Breakstone's. It is creamier and much better tasting than any other
brand I have tried. I eat it almost every morning with one of these: (1)
cereal like special K, granola, or cheerios (2) mandarin oranges (3)
pineapple in juice (4) lemon or lime juice and splenda--tastes like
cheesecake!

Just an unrelated question about Robert Le Vine's post. If you see this
could you tell me more? Your protein shake with pudding and coolwhip sounds
great. What amounts of protein powder and pudding do you use? Does it end
up with a shake consistancy or a pudding consistancy?

hello! I am not a big red meat eater. i only eat it in taco bell tacos
believe it or not, maybe b/c it isn't real meat. LOL anyway. . . I find
lowfat PNB is good, and cheese was always recommended by my surgeon, so you
are good there. i am a new post-op and need to get in 80 grams of protein a
day, so i am in the same boat you are. But i drink 60 grams a day through
protein drinks. ISOPURE zero carb (40 grams)and MYOPLEX (20 grams)are both
found at GNC and VITAMIN SHOPPE and are pre-made. I tried Tofu before and
thought i would hate it, but actually loved it ( I AM A PICKY EATER!) i had
tofu fingers, it was tofu with bread crumbs and it was baked, like chicken
fingers, and had a little mayo on it, it was pretty good! FAT free, sugar
free choc. pudding is good and pretty good protein. I know alot of people
drink NO SUGAR added carnation instant breakfast, i cannot, too much sugar
for me, but many can tolerate it. A handful of nuts can be a few grams.
Deli meats with cheese. Beans are an excellent source. Hope this helped
you! goodluck!

I don't eat red meat either, it just doesn't agree with me, but I
absolutely love Boca and Morningstar brands "fake meat". They
have hot dogs, sausage patties, hamburgers, meatballs and several other
items that taste really good and provide a good source of protein in food
form. They are in the freezer section, if you have a Super Wal-Mart in
your area they should have both brands.

I haven't tried much red meat, 3 months post op. Do you use a protien
shake? or try any protien bars. I can tell a difference in the days I start
off with a protien shake, and get in nearly half my protien for the day in
one shot. I use Carb Solutions, available at Walmart, but have also use
Designer protien which is good too.
