Question:
Yet another protein question....please help!

I am 1 week post-op and need some SERIOUS help with protien. I have SUCH a gag reflex that all the protein drinks discust me! I am trying to drink liquids all day long but am beginning to feel weak. Someone please give me some suggestions what I can do while still on the liquid "diet". Thanks in advance!!! Tracy    — Tracy T. (posted on May 13, 2002)

I know some people still don't like the flavor, but try one and see, can't hurt. It's called Nature's Best Zero Carb Isopure. It comes in individual 20 oz. glass bottles, about $3 apiece. It's a crystal light like drink, but not as sweet as CL. Good luck!

I went through the same thing. Just the thought of another protein shake gagged me. I finally tried Slim Fast Soy Protein and it worked. Doesn't seem as thick, you mix it with water vs milk. I am 2 years out and still cannot tolerate milk anymore. Hang in there - it does get better - 2 years out down 152 pounds

Uh, may want to watch the sugar on that slimfast. I would have died I would have dumped so bad at one week out! I used unflavored protein powder and mixed it in lots of things. One of my favorites: mix cream of wheat according to the baby recipe on the box with milk and add in some protien powder. A pat of butter and a packet of splenda: MMMM! (My dr allowed this--they served me cream of wheat in the hospital. They said as long as it didn't stick in the spoon it was OK.) Also, milk + sf/caffeine free instant latte powder + unflavored protein powder + ice. It's very thin and tastes great! I also found some sf/ff ice cream bars by blue bunny. The chocolate had 4 grams of protein. I like to be able to chew something. Happy losing!

Tracy, I mix diet orange soda, with Vanilla Whey protein, an equal, some ice and a little lite cool whip. Mix it in a blender and it tastes like a creamsicle. Best of luck to you. Karen

Try Carnation Instant Breakfast (the no sugar added kind) add 8 ounces of skim milk AND mix in 1/3 cup of powdered skim milk. This is about 20 grams of protein in about 9 ounces of liquid. Just sip, sip, sip. Good luck.

Hi, I don't use protein drinks "regularly" I eat alot of chicken and steak for my protein but when I do I found that I like Carb Solutions I buy mine at Walmart and they cost 4.97 for 4 that is not bad considering some cost an arm and a leg. I think that they taste a little like a yoohoo with added chocolate. Good luck and god bless. Open RNY -93lbs and counting. BTC In Columbus Ohio, Dr. Christopher Kaczmarksi, 10/4/01

I too can not STAND the protien drinks. I finally found my answer. I needed something that wasn't gritty, milky or chalky. I needed something that was more clear and fruity. I found it! Try Isopure Zero Carb. You can buy it at GNC. I recommend the Apple Melon. It tastes like a Jolly Rancher. It's a CLEAR protien drink sorta like Crystal Light. It has 40 grams of Whey Protien per bottle. They usually only have them in the FRIDGE section of GNC...or you can find them online. Here's the thing... even if you only drink HALF of it... or add HALF to Crystal Light... thats still 20 grams of protien. You can dilute it if it's not to your taste liking... it's pretty good!!!

Here is a website for stage 2 protein, like blended cottage cheese, etc. Good luck! http://www.acs.ohio-state.edu/units/osuhosp/patedu/homedocs.pdf/nut-diet.pdf/nut-othe.pdf/gastric.pdf/hi-pro-f.pdf

Many doctors don't have their patients on any protein supplements at only 10 days out. You may be feeling so tired just because you're dehydrated, not necessarily because you need nutrients. I wouldn't worry about getting them in just yet. Just make sure you are getting in as much clear liquid as you can.
