Question:
LOL! Anyone else become a shop a holic once getting to goal?
It amazes me the clothes I can wear now, and with the new job, I've had a GREAT excuse to go shopping, er, several times for my "business" clothes. Anyone else? 8 ) Love, Donna in AL — Donna S. C. (posted on May 6, 2002)

I'm 9 weeks post op and already having trouble controlling myself. Even
though I have plenty of clothes in the closet to "grow into" I
still want to buy buy buy. It's so frustrating when I only wear the outfit
2 times before it's too big. Guess I need to learn some self control.
Think there's a surgery available for shopaholics? lol

Hi! I am and always have been a shopoholic! There is nothing like walking
through the door with a ton of bags, then showing anyone home all my cool
new purchaces! I have been SO good at waiting to buy new clothes, but I had
to break down this weekend. When I fit into size 16s comfortably, I HAD to
buy a new pair of jeans. And it was really worth it! Even though I had lost
a lot of weight, I didn't feel like I looked good- and it's cause all my
clothes were too BIG!! I looked frumpy. Anyway, I love shopping even more
now. I can't wait to hit the Gap sales racks this fall!! :)

Oh Donna, you've just hit on my new weakness! I love to shop now. I've lost
over 170 lbs and am wearing a size 4 in petites. A problem I had and didn't
think about is that when I need to do yard work or any kind of dirty work,
I had no "old outdoor clothes". I don't seem to have time to get
to yard sales to meet this need. But I just got back from lunch and I went
to Walmart and purchased some child's size 10/12 shorts for $3 a pair. What
a bargain. I don't buy anything unless it's on sale. Business clothes for
work I have been waiting for the 50%-70% sales and do quite fine. I'm
becoming a sales pro. Isn't it wonderful!!

Shopaholic?? You KNOW it!!!! I went to the mall yesterday and tried on
clothes to see if I changed any sizes. I was wearing a size 12 Lee Jeans
at the beginning of April. Yesterday, I tried on the size 10 Lee jeans and
actually got them buttoned and zippered!!!! AND I could breathe in them!!
I LOVE shopping for clothes now!!!

I'm still about 45 lbs from goal, and have been wearing out my credit cards
at the mall! Last Thursday I bought a pair of Tommy Hilfiger jeans, I've
NEVER spent that much on a pair of jeans for myself (got them on sale for
about $40), much less buying such a huge brand name! I think I've replaced
my food addiction with shopping! YIKES! Oh well...makes me look good and
FEEL good...and you only live once!

I wish I was laughing with you, but sadly, I am not. Yes, I became a
shop-a-holic, but it was not a good thing. My credit cards are almost maxed
with the purchases that I made, sometimes desperately, to fill that empty
hole that food used to fill when I was lonely, depressed, or bored. I've
put the credit cards away and I'm in counseling to deal with the REAL
issues in my life that lead me to behave this way... never quite feeling
good enough, insecurity, and that kind of stuff.
As for buying
clothes, I try to avoid it. I buy bras and simple underpants as I need them
(and down 137 lbs in 7.5 months, 310 to 173, MAN have I ever needed them!)
at Target or Wal-Mart, and the rest of my clothes I get from WLS friends
who have gone before me, my support group's excellent clothing exchange, or
two thrift stores that are in wealthy communities near where I live and
work (they get the BEST clothes... lots of J.Jill, Eddie Bauer, Land's End,
etc...) A few weeks ago, I had a big thrift store splurge... three pairs of
pants, six shirts/sweaters, a jacket, and two pairs of Victoria's Secret
pajamas... for $50. That's the kind of spending frenzy that my single-mom
budget CAN support.
I've also been holding out the carrot for
myself that when I get to goal (130 lbs) that I am allowed to spend $1000
on new clothes... $300 on beautiful things to wear for special events (and
my boyfriend wants to help pick these items), and $700 on regular everyday
and work clothes... and several of my girlfriends and co-workers have
already asked to be in on these sure-to-be-fun shopping trips!
My
point is that there's a difference between clothes that you need to go to
work and get through life, a few "treats" here and there,
and trading one unhealthy obsession for another, as I did. I hope to lick
this "addicted" behavior once and for all this time. I'd
like to be free of these coping strategies that don't work well for me
anymore. Good luck on your journey... and I'd be glad to
hear from anyone else who is struggling with this issue.

Yes!!... with a budget lovers twist. I've always loved scouring thrift
stores for treasures. My teenage daughter ended up with a closet full of
designer clothes for next to no $$$. Now it's my turn! I'm having so much
fun poking around the shops and actully finding great stuff that fits (or
will fit soon). Recently I found a silk Liz Claiborne dress for $1.50.

I forgot to mention some of my other favorite bargain hunting strategies.
E-bay is jammed with good bargains on great clothes. It isn't quite as
inexpensive as thrift stores or yard sales because you have to pay for
shipping. Great buys are still there however. I bought a brand new, tags
still attached, gorgeous dress for my son's wedding. It retailed for over
$300 dollars and I paid $60. Another on-line opportunity is to scour the
"clearance" "bargain" or "outlet" sections of
the various clothing websites. Just this week I bought a khaki Gap skirt
for $9.99 which was marked down from $44.00. They had a special going which
gave free shipping.
