Question:
I understand that many need to have B-12 shots post-op...
are these self-administered, how often and what is the cost? Thanks for your answers — Stephanie S. (posted on April 9, 2002)

I take the sublinqual B=12 (dissolves under your tounge) vs the shot. My
doctor feels that you get better, more even results form the sublingual. I
buy it at GNC and my levels are "off the charts" (good that is)
Either form is good, just make sure you use one.

I too have been told by my Doctor, I will need B-12. He said that the Sub
1000 B-12, works just the same. I think I will go with this, rather than
take a shot every month.

One shot a month did'nt help me. I take two.
I also would like to know how much the sublingual cost.
It sounds like the best way to go.

I have not had surgery yet but I already take a sub-lingual B-12, B-6 folic
acid and it really seems to help my energy levels.

I take the b-12 shots, I am 8 weeks post-op and I take them bi-weekly for
the first 6 months, then once a month there after. For a 10cc vial the
cost was under 9$ and the syrenges were .30 cents each. I was terrified of
giving myself an injection, even cried the first time I had to do it... but
it is really painless and so simple to do and I feel so much more energetic
afterward that I now count the days until my next injection. I have no
desire to try the sublinqual since I have gotten over the initial fear of
the needle.

I need 2 shots per month to hold a steasy level. At first, I got 'em at the
doc, but I'm way too busy to be sitting there waiting for a break, but it
was no co-pay to me. If I get my B12 thru INs, I pay $4 for 3 months
supply. If I go NO ins (I didn't like their vials), I pay $7. Big deal.
The syringes were 4/$1. I almost had a nervous breakdwon before I did it,
and I asked me if I wanted to get in the car and go do it at the doc &
me said no, so I did it and it's NOTHING. Signed, the biggest wimp on
earth.

Hi, I am 10 months post-op - I take a B-12 shot once a week - syringes cost
about me about 20.00 for 100 & the B-12 cost me 22.50 for a vial that
last approximately 6 months for me. This is a pretty minimum cost!! I do
not administer it myself, but can!! Actually, I have taught my DH how and
he does it for me and my 20 year old daughter can also administer it. Good
Luck!! Karan - 120#s!

Not everyone has to get the shots, I take a sublingual B12 from GNC once a
week, per my surgeons orders and have not had any problems. For me this is
much easier than having to get a shot.

My Surgeon gave the option of shots or sublingual. I opted for shots since
I have to take to many pills and potions as is. I give myself a shot once a
month. The b12 was prescription so I paid 9.00 co pay for like 6 months of
vials. The needles are something like .45 cents each. One thing, diabetic
needles don't go deep enough, you need a longer intra muscular needle. Talk
to your nurse about this, get the size they recommend. I have not problem
with this at all, I thought I might be icked giving myself a shot but it
doesn't bother me. I inject in the top of the thigh. Good luck
