Question:
Has anyone experienced sores on their heads with their hair loss?
My scalp literally has painful bumps...like pimples kinda. Never had this problem before surgery. Even with my post-natal hair loss. — Karen B. (posted on March 11, 2002)

Hi Karen. Although still pre-op, I've been experiencing hair loss over the
last several months due to my health problems. Yes, those pimple-like
sores are icky, aren't they? From what I understand, these sores are
actually from the hair follicle becoming infected when you lose hair and
new hair isn't growing out. I've been using Therapro, a system that has a
shampoo and conditioner that helps thoroughly clean your scalp to keep the
folicles open so new hair can grow while being gentle on the new hairs
trying to grow (or we hope will grow!) The kit also contains an all
natural scalp treatment that is supposed to help stimulate new hair growth.
Although, I will tell you. Don't use the treatment part unless you're OK
with smelling something similiar to BenGay. The shampoo though is OK. I
have noticed some new hair growth along the front hairline but not much at
the top of my head yet. I've only used it for less than a month now. The
good thing about the whole system is it doesn't hurt to use it when you
have those sores.

Sounds like you have some ingrown hairs or clogged sebaceous cysts. Either
way the best way to treat them is to apply warm compresses as many times a
day as you can. An ingrown hair is a hair that is trying to poke through
the surface and for whatever reason is meeting resistance. The warm
compresses will soften the skin to help ease it through. You shouldn't pic
or pop them as tempting as it maybe. Good luck.

My PCP told me that my scalp was dry and irritated, probably because I've
eliminated TOO MUCH fat from my diet... but you know what, I'm more
inclined to believe the answers others have given here. They seem more
sensible. I waited a while, and they went away on their own. :-) Good luck!

I've had the same problem just recently. I've been using shampoo that has
conditioner in it and it seems to stop the itching. I use it about 3-4
times a week.
