Question:
Has anyone done a spa day?
I am 4.5 months postop (down from 360 to 280) and am going on vacation this weekend. I am going skiing and would have never done that at my pre-op weight (still nervous about the weight I am now, but getting over it). Anyway, we are going to do a spa day in Colorado (massage, facials, etc.) and I am nervous because I have heard spas can be snooty to overweight people. Does anyone have any bad/good spa experiences? — Rachel S. (posted on March 11, 2002)

Hi! What fun!! I haven't been to a 'spa'- but I DID go for a massage about
2 weeks pre-op. I was nervous- the sugery had me focusing on my body and my
weight like never before. But it was GREAT! The room was all warm and
smelled good, with light music in the air... I would suggest it to anyone.
These people are professionals, weight shouldn't be an issue for them. When
I was getting my massage, I had an epiphany... that this is just A BODY-
not the all I am by anymeans. I am more than a sum of my physical parts.
Just try to relax and enjoy! It sounds like a blast!

What a wonderful vacation!!! I'm excited for you! I am pre-op, 258
pounds. I've been to several day spas and I've never had any problems with
the staff. Maybe your sources have just had a bad experience. Although
you pay the base fee for your services, anyone who touches you is going to
expect a tip (unless you go to an all-inclusive spa) so they work hard at
pampering you. If they are rude or treat you ugly, A) they don't get a
tip, B) tell the management. Management at day spas strive on your
relaxation and comfortablity and will "nip any negative situation in
the bud". Enjoy your trip! :-)

When making the appointments, be freindly and mention that you're
celebrating a huge weight loss and that this is your reward for success,
and motivation go lose xxx pounds more. Most people who work for a spa or
in a "beauty" relate profession are aware of your situation and
are really thrilled for you. My new hairdresser has been the best at
helping me deal with the thining hair, my manicurist knows that our visits
are my rewards for good work---and they really do get excited at my
progress. My spa experiences have been limited to the spas on cruise ship,
and these people are really nice to everyone---that is what they are paid
for and how they get tips. If you feel comfortable talking with WLS to
someone, mention it, these professionals may have some advise that can help
you deal with being on a very low calorie diet, loosing weight quickly,
sagging skin, or some other problem area. Enjoy your day, and make the
most of it!

I've been to the spa twice before the weight loss and once since. They
treated me the same each time. It was a wonderful experience and I can't
wait to go again. I was nervous when I found out the person giving my
massage was a man but he made me feel so relaxed and good that I lost all
apprehension laying on that table naked as a jay bird. The only thing
covered was a small (and I mean small) cloth across my pubic area. Honey
go and enjoy! Pamper yourself and let the Diva in you shine!

I am both overweight and a massage therapist. EVERYONE comes in different
shapes and sizes and to be honest, I would rather work on someone with some
substance than some of the skinny minny women I have worked on. Just relax
and enjoy yourself! If you feel uncomfortable with anything, just let the
therapist know. No worries!

It has never been my experience to have a a massage therapist be anything
but completely professional with me. The receptionist may be snooty but
I've been treated kindly by the masseur, facialist, manicurist everyone.
And frankly, never ran into a snooty receptionist. Every spa I've been to
they are so nice and calm - must be the music. I've had both men and women
doing the treatments and the only thing they ever talked to me about was my
skin being either too dry or sensitive. So you know I haven't been since
my surgery but all my treatments were don't 250+
Just wait - you will love it and be addicted.

A real professional would never be snotty to his client! I mean we pay BIG
bucks for facials, etc. Plus they want a tip, don't they? I went on a
cruise to Alaska at 6 mos postop (first surgery) and pampered myself to a
facial, pedicure, and manicure. It was wonderful! Imagine, if you will,
the ship gently rocking, dim light, candle, warm blanket, sublingual
relaxing soft music, and wow! who could stay nervous about weight? I was
a little embarassed by my scar but got over that quickly! It was a great
experience and that is what the true professional masseuse will want you to
experience. Have a good time and enjoy each moment of every new
experience....we deserve it FINALLY!
