Question:
Do all liquid protiens taste nasty? What is the best way to use it.
I am pre-op, scheduled for 3/20 LAP RNY. I am concerned that I won't get enough protein in so I sampled a Vita-4-life Mocha flavored liquid protein-YUK! It tasted sweet & very sour. My tummy felt a little queazy. I really think that the Vita-4-life products will be great, having 30g protein per serving, but if I can't handle the taste now I can imagine how horrible it will be after surgery. Help! I need to know what I can do to make it taste better or find another product. Thanks so much for your advice. ~ Debbie — Deborah F. (posted on February 21, 2002)

You'll just have to keep trying something until you find what you like. I
got samples for $2/each from vitalady.com and tried one a day until I found
one I could tolerate (just mixed with water and ice). Then I started
playing around with it and it really tastes great now. A treat I look
forward to 3 times a day! Good luck and God Bless!

I think they all suck. But, as my surgeon said, they could save your life.
Just take a deep breath, hold your nose and swallow. Good Luck

I, too, didnt like any of the protein powders that I had to mix myself. I
tried 3 or 4 of them from GNC. The good thing about that store is that you
can take anything back you dont like, even if its been opened. I do the
pre-mixed Carb Solutions from Walmart. My favorite is the chocolate one
mixed with 4 or 5 crushed ice cubes and blended with a few tablespoons of
instant decaf coffee. Its great! If you like coffee, try this for a protein
drink. Its like a treat! I also have found the best protein bars around...
Designer Whey Gourmet Protein Bars, the "Perfect ABSberry" one is
the best, in my opinion. I like them so much Im considering trying the
protein powder mixes by them also. Just a few ideas for you. Good luck on
your journey to the "other side"!

This is a fairly new list, that only discusses protein supplements (a
little ooze into vites). A little wild & crazy and some of the recipes
submitted are weight GAINERS, but hopefully, those are marked. There are
hundreds of protein products on the market. Although I use a collagen
based product myself once/day, I far prefer the whey powders in falvor
& texture. So, no, you're never stuck with something icky.

You may want to try a liquid protein that is not a "shake" type.
I'd suggest trying Zero-carb Isopure. It is a clear liquid and comes in
several flavors. I get mine at GNC. It's not thick like the protein
powders. You get used to the taste after a while, although it's really not
bad. I switch between powders and the Isopure. Be prepared, however, as it
can get expensive. It comes in 20 oz. bottles that can run from $3.00 to
$3.50 apiece. Good luck!

I could'nt afford the protein drinks and the many I did try were just so
nasty. So I just decided I would eat all meat (for the most part). Well my
doctor (not surgeon) took one look at my lab results and told me to
"get off the protein suppliments NOW!" I told her I wasn't on
any! And I was'nt.
My protein count was 8.1 (or 8.2). My surgeon was pleased when I told him
it was high. So you don't have to buy those expensive and nasty protein
drinks. I like to get thin slices of Roast Beef at Aldi's. One slice is 7
grams of protein. So a couple slices gives me 14 grams and I'd rather eat
my protein than drink it. It's much more satisfing and natural. ;)

I am with Daniel on this. I think protein supps in theory should work, but
I don't think they do, or at least in my case it disn't seem to help. I
bought a can of Nature's best protein powder for 50 bucks. it lasted 5
weeks. 1 shake everyday. I have been plateuing almost that whole time
losing only 15 pounds in 5 weeks. just recently I ran out, and have not
bothered to restock. I am now starting to lose again. could be that the
plateau broke on it's own, or... that the protein powder was causing the
plateau! I am off protein supps for the time being.
I am eating more according to the food pyramid. getting a good balanced
diet. I have lost 5 pounds now in a week. If this works better than the
expensive protein supps I will spread the word far, and wide that those
things are not needed for good weight loss.

I use protein powders and mix them with water and just shake them up. Let
me tell you that some mix much better than others as some require you to
blend them. But, as time goes on a small can of tuna in water (2.75 oz.)
has 18 grams of protein and tastes very good to me! I like meat, can
tolerate red meat and seafood better than chicken, which varies for some
people. What I like most about the protein drinks is that I feel I am
quickly getting in some great nutrition and protein and I drink them
enroute to and from work in the car, etc. As noted below, Vitalady.com will
sell you samples so that you can try flavors out and GNC will sometimes let
you have samples of the powders to take home or will let you return items,
althugh they are kind of expensive. Take it one step at a time and see what
you like and can tolerate post-op as your tastes may change. Best Wishes!

I have been told it is the amino acids in the protein mixes that taste so
yukky and are hard to mask. I have had better luck with the pre-digested
liquid proteins like Proteinex or GNC Challenge liquid protein wild cherry.
I take them just like I would cough syrup. A couple swallows and you are
done. No nursing a large drink that tastes bad. So far..Proteinex works
best for me.

I cannot stand protein shakes, but this is not bad at all. My nutritionist
told me to drink this twice a day: 2 cups of milk, 1 packet carnation
instant breakfast (no suger added) and 1/2 cup dry milk. This mixture has
about 30 grams of protein.

In the beginning, you will be lucky to get any portion of your protein down
as you will be swollen inside and out. :) But as a little time goes by you
will find that the more solid food you eat the more protein you can get
just from your diet. As long as you tolerate solids well, there may not be
a need for you to use ANY supplements, just as Daniel said. I didn't use
anything regularly for the first 8 months, although I tried a bunch of
stuff during the liquid and soft food stage of my diet. When I got to 8
months I realized I was eating too much sugar and too many carbs, so I
started using a protein bar as one of my mini-meals and having a shake for
dinner or breakfast occasionally. I now get 100 grams of protein a day on
average. You might try what I did and use an unflavored protein powder that
can be mixed with sweet and salty foods alike. I have the MLO Milk and Egg
Protein powder. It is good in cream of wheat, smoothies made with yogurt
and fruit, soups, and shakes. The can says you can cook with it, too. The
bottom line is don't think you have to make yourself miserable to succeed!
