Question:
I just ate 1 whole piece of pizza
I am 4 1/2 weeks post-op from open rny transected. I have not had any problems and often do not feel like I had surgery. I eat alot less than I used to but I want to know if there are others who can eat more than most others. For breakfast I ate 1 egg and 1 piece of toast. could any body else eat that much at 4 1/2 weeks? I never feel sick afterwards. Please help me!! — [Anonymous] (posted on February 8, 2002)

That does sound like a bit much! Over how long did you eat the pizza? If
you took an hour or two it might make sense, but how could you fit all that
pizza into your tiny 1 oz. pouch in 15-20 minutes? I'm confused. Maybe
your surgeon made your pouch larger than normal. (?)

I'm the original poster and it took me about 15 min to eat the one piece
I often wonder if my pouch is bigger.

Welcome to my world. I know how you feel; I too can eat more than most
people who've had RNY. My surgeon explained several times to me that what
is most likely happening is that as the pouch gets full, the food gets
pushed into the intestines, and while most people will get sick, there are
about 10% who get no ill effects from it. There is always the possibility
of a staple line disruption. Was your stomach transected or just stapled?
How is your weight loss coming along? I've emailed with quite a few people
from this site who can also eat a lot more than most. Most have learned
that they must rely on self-control as they never get the negative
reinforcement (pain, throwing up) from eating too much. Trust me, I know
how frustrating it is that we haven't developed the "tool" we
counted on having so much, but weight loss is possible. We just have to
work a bit harder at it. Good luck!

Everybody is different, some throw up ever meal every day, some like me and
apparently you have little to no trouble. I personally didn't have this
surgery to be nauseous at every meal. I am thrilled I can eat NORMALLY and
guess what? One piece of pizza for the average person is NORMAL. If your
like me, pre-op that wouldn't even have been an appetizer, I would have
just been getting cranked up. I hope you enjoyed that piece of pizza. You
certainly deserve to.

I was pretty much the same as you it sounds like. I could eat that amount
at first but only wanted to eat 2 or 3 times a day. I really worried about
the amount I could eat but decided I must be doing something right because
I was losing weight fairly fast. I had open RNY on 1-11-01 and have now
lost 152 lbs. 50 more to go and now 13 mths. later it's going very slow.
I'm one of those that never get sick or throw up! Bummer! lol.But now I'm
back to worrying as it seems like I can really eat way more now!

I am 7 weeks PO and I CAN eat like you. In the very beginning I asked my
doctor how to determine when I felt full if I didn't ever feel hungry. I
guess knowing what is a "good" quantity to eat is the only way.
You know what you should and shouldn't eat, so eat normally and healthfully
and allow the WLS to prevent you from binging and eating like you did
before. 1 egg and 1 piece of toast is normal....it's not like you ate a 3
egg omelette and 2 bagels! The only thing that makes me puke seems to be
chicken and eating too fast. Otherwise, the larger quantities of
"healthy" food are fine, I think. The proof is in the weight
loss. If you are losing, no problem.

I was worried about being able to eat too much. I had LAP Proximal RNY.
Within the first week out I was able to eat pureed meat and a side dish for
dinner or 2 eggs for breakfast. I have found out the hard way, by
vomitting, that I can actually eat too much. I am thankful for this tool,
but on the other hand, it gets annoying because I eat while I'm still
experiencing hunger feelings until that one extra bite and the feeling
changes. Then it's too late! I just have to really pay attention to
myself and learn. I found that if I drink water in between meals I feel
full a lot. Sometimes it doesn't seem like ther's enough time in a day to
eat everything that I wanted to get to. Other days I think, ut-oh. I keep
a food log so that I can see patterns and to make sure I eat balanced.
