Question:
I just lost my job and my insurance. I need a good insurance company
I need a insurance company that will cover this surgery. I just lost my job AND my health insurance. I live in Michigan. Does anyone out there know of any personal insurance companies for the unemployed that will cover WLS??? Any help would be greatly appreciated...Thanks :) — [Anonymous] (posted on February 7, 2002)

Insurance from the unemployed is EXPENSIVE, and usually it doesn't cover a
lot of fancy stuff like WLS. My opinion: go on COBRA for a month or so,
then get a job (any job) that has insurance benefits and go forward with
your surgery. You can always quit in a few months. It's worth it to get
the surgery covered.

Don't know if this is an option, but I'd stay on COBRA and get the surgery
done while you're still on it. COBRA is a federal law that requires your
former employer to allow you to stay on the group health insurance plan for
up to 18 months. The law does not require that your former employer pay
for the premiums, but if you can afford them, it would save you from having
to go through the whole approval process again. If you do go with COBRA
and get another job right away, the COBRA requirement goes away and then
you'd probably have to go through approval with your new insurance.

If you worked for a company that's required to offer COBRA, go for it!
Otherwise, try going to www.cpiclife.com. They offer short term medical
insurance that fills the gap until you obtain a medical plan. It costs
alot less then COBRA.
