Question:
About having a medical bracelet..and organ donation
Is it important to put on it which surgery you had or just that you had gastric bypass surgery? Also can you still be an organ donor after this surgery? — Denise S. (posted on January 16, 2002)

My doctor gave me a card to carry in my wallet, I also keep my 'organ
donor' card in there, up front where it could easily be found in an
emergency. If you think you need a bracelet or necklace, I think you could
order one thru your local pharmacy.

I'm probably going to start sounding like a broken record, but here goes.
Emergency personnel almost NEVER look in your wallet. They're busy trying
to make sure you are OK and get you to a hospital. Also, in a car
accident, your purse could be under the wreckage or thrown a hundred yards
away. I wouldn't count on the card being much help in an emergency. There
are a number of places to get bracelets or necklaces with medical
information. Remeber, the jewelry is intended to alert emergency personnel
that you have something going on that they need to be aware of. Therefore,
the jewelry needs to be at least 'medical looking' enough for them to
notice.

My bracelet says "Proximal Roux-en-Y gastric bypass". I feel it
is important for emergency medical personnel to know that my insides are
"rewired".
