Question:
Can you retain water from too much protein?
For the first time since my surgery two months ago, I noticed that my calves have adema. The only thing I did differently yesterday before I noticed it was an extra 20g of protein. Could this be the cause? — [Anonymous] (posted on January 10, 2002)

Adema you may have had also PRIOR to surgery? Maybe your ankles were too
thick then to notice? I had adema pre-op...and I still get adema post-op,
depending what I eat. Maybe you should check with your Doctor on that one.
If you ARE dehydrated, this may require medical attention?

I am the original poster. I went from no retention in my legs to swollen
in one day, and when I woke up, my legs were still swollen. This isn't
something that is normal for me

If this is not normal for you and the swelling did not go down overnight,
call you doctor. There are many different things that can cause edema,
some relatively harmless and some a little more serious. Better to be safe
than sorry.
