Question:
Help! I am having surgery tomorrow and I took my antibiotic
at 4&5pm it made me sick to my stomach and I finally threw up at 10:20pm and I am due for another dose at 11pm. I don't know of I can even swallow it. It makes me sick just knowing I have to take it one more time. — Bonnie S. (posted on January 7, 2002)

I wasn't pre-medicated with antibiotics, so I am not sure if that is what
it is for, but I don't see why they couldn't give you IV antibiotics before
and/or after. (I was given only postop IV antibiotics during
hospitalization.) It will provide an immediate effect. If it made you
that sick, you may have an allergy to the medicine, or a sensitivity to it.
Your doctor should be on call and could tell you what to do. I would say
not to take the last dose, if you are just going to throw it up. It seems
pointless. I know your biggest fear is probably that they will cancel the
surgery, but I am sure that there is a way around this by giving you the IV
antibiotics tomorrow preoperatively. Just take a deep breath. Good luck
tomorrow.
