Question:
What is the G tube?

I have read a couple postings that refer to a G tube, and having it taken out after Surgery. This is making me kind of nervous...    — Ilene S. (posted on December 18, 2001)

You may be referring to an NG tube which goes up your nose, down your throat and into your stomach to prevent and digestive juices from entering your intestinal area. It is basically a vaccumn tube. I have heard that it is very uncomfortable to have in and getting it taken out is a good thing...not much to be nervous about...

The NG tube is different then the G tube. The G tube is a tube that goes through your abdominal wall to your "old stomach". Some drs place these as a precautionary measure in case you need to be fed this way (ie you have a leak..etc..). The tube is removed usualy 2-3 weeks after surgery, leaving a "marker" for your old stomach. In this way if you ever developed problems with your old stomach they could go in and check things out. Hope this answers your question.
