Question:
Does weight loss come off just as fast if you have PCOS?
I am reviewing lots of info in the library, but have not found anything recent. I need to know if you lose weight just as fast as a "normal" menstrating woman after WLS. And, have your periods resumed back to normal afterwards? If you can elaborate on your journey with PCOS and WLS I would love to hear from you. Thanks a bunch! — Deborah F. Pardon my ignorance, but I don't know what PCOS is.

I just read the profile of a fellow AMOS member who has PCOS. Her name is

I also have PCOS, and had Lap RNY on May 25, 2001. I am down 89 pounds and
am losing at a good rate. My periods, which were almost non existant for
years, are normal and actually coming a bit earlier each month. What a
concept! the hirsutism is no different, and I still pluck every day. I feel
better health wise and I believe that exercising is the key. For women with
PCOS, it can be more difficult to lose weight, so now that I am getting
close to goal I make sure and go to the gym at least three times per week,
as well as try to walk the other days and take three dance classes each
week. I figure, now that the "honeymoon" period is over, I have
to work harder than some to continue to lose, partly because of my PCOS and
partly because of my hypothyroid. So far so good, and my PCOS symptoms are
mcuh better. Best of luck to you on your journey!

Hi there. I suffered from PCOS for years pre-op. Not only have my periods
become regular (shock!) But the hair growth is almost gone- at least for
me. And I have lost 132 lbs in just over 10 months. Good luck!

Hi, yes, me, the infamous Karen Randall :) I just got a e-mail from a woman
who's daughter has PCOS. I wasn't 100% sure if she was the one who had RNY
or her daughter- however- She said that being Rx glucophage (a common drug
used to battle insulin issues, and given to PCOS women to combat PCOS
because after a while we just stop losing at a point and this helps jump
start our weight loss again.... I am going to my Endo to see if this is the
case. I have lost 90lbs, my periods are normal- hirsutism is same ole- but
I just started vaniqa treatment- any how- it's off to the Endo to see if
the Glucophage will jump start me again and get these last 30-40 Lbs. off!
I do consider my weight loss slower- although I am HAPPY about my results-
I could lose some more.... :0

These are great questions! I have suffered with PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian
Syndrome) for many years although I was only recently diagnosed. I
struggled with obesity, infertility, irregular menstrual cycles, facial
hair and cystic ovaries. I had my WLS (GRDS) on June 22 of this year. I
have lost 89 pounds. I feel like I am loosing at a quick pace, but the
speed of weight loss is quite variable between one person and the next.
Since surgery, my cycles have been every 28 days lasting 4-5 days. This is
the most regular I have ever been in my life. I keep waiting for something
strange to happen, but so far each month has come without a suprise. My
facial hair (under my chin) is growing a bit slower but is still there. I
did not expect any resolution of this though. I hope this helps some. If
you have more spcific questions, please feel free to e-mail me and I will
try to answer them. [email protected]

Hi Deborah!
I seem to have lost weight just as fast as other "non-pcos"
women. I still need to take Provera to force my periods. And unfortunately
the hirsutism is still the same. PCOS SUCKS! ok I feel better
now.........:)
