Question:
how much do you have to weight before you have a revision?

Does the insurance pay for it? — Bonnie S. (posted on October 12, 2001)

I'm not sure there is an exact answer to your question. There are many reasons someone might need a revision. I've known people to have revisions as soon as 6 months postop. You can find out tons of information at the Yahoo revision lists:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DS_Revision
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OSSG-Revision
Good Luck to you!!

Hi, Bonnie. I just had a revision from a stomach stapling to an RNY (lap). It had been 17 years for me, but that's just because I didn't even realize I could have a revision, and I wanted it done lap. I am not sure if you meant "wait" or "weighed" when you posted, but as long as you meet the ins. criteria you should be fine. I was approved and I was barely in the 40 bmi. Hi, I am having a revision next week to transected pouch. My first rny was only 11 mos ago and it was stapling only with stomach left attached. It came "undone" at the top of the pouch. Partial disruption. I was dismayed at first but now I am having it done and this time my doctor will transect so it will be permanent. By the way, I would like to clarify that disruptions do not occur because we "outeat" our pouch! The staple lines disrupt when there is not transection because the two mucuos edges of the stomach that are just stapled can never form scar tissue. If the pouch is physically separated (cut/transected) from the old stomach, the scar tissue forms a tight seal. That is why when people say "75 lbs gone forever!". Unless you are transected with RNY, you can never be sure. Some staple lines disrupt 4 or 5 yrs down the road....as Michelle Curan has told us. I didn't believe I would be one of the unfortunate ones but it happened. I followed the diet 100% and didn't even stretch my pouch a bit. I asked the doctor after my Upper GI and he said it was not stretched a bit. SOOOOOO please don't think that when you have a staple line disruption, you did it yourself. It is just a mechanical problem with untransected pouches. Wish me luck. I will be having it open again. Thought I could have it lap this time, but doctor says there are probably too many adhesions from my first surgery. Says lap is best on "virgin stomachs"...LOL

Ive had 2 revisions. both having nothing to do with my staplesor pouch. one was one month postop i developed a stricture. More recently (Im 2 years post now) in July I had a revision to extend my limb and give me it all back since I never stopped loosing weight and dropped down to 89 pounds. Now I have just my small pouch. and yes insurance covered both revisions. If your insurance covered your original surgery than any revisions to it is just about guarenteed to be covered as in my case.
