Question:
Does treatment for Tourette Syndrome effect eligibility?
have TS, OCD, Depression and Adult ADD. I am being treated for these conditions with prozac and clonidine. I function extremely well and have few problems. Any comments and similar situations with surgery? — Patricia R. (posted on July 30, 2001)

Hi Patricia, if you have a psych evaluation prior to approval for surgery,
the psych doc will most likely ask a bunch of questions about your
conditions. If they are well-treated with meds and you are high
functioning, I don't see why they would cause you to get a negative psych
evaluation. The doc will evaluate your depression closely, since WLS
surgery will cause a natural depression (for anyone) for a while after the
surgery. I don't know about Klonidine, but taking Prozac and meds in that
category (Zoloft, Paxil) don't immediately cause a problem with approval
for surgery. A great number of MO people are naturally depressed and on
meds. such as these.

I don't think the prozac would make a difference since there are many
post-ops and pre-ops who have been on antidepressants. But you will want to
make sure your surgeon knows about the clonidine since it can effect your
blood pressure if you abruptly stop taking it.
