Question:
9 days post op with no energy
I am 9 days post op and i have no energy. I want to be able to get up and go for a walk but I am so weak. I hate this feeling. I cannot even open a door. What is going on and what can help? Did any one else experience this? — [Anonymous] (posted on July 21, 2001)

It was six weeks before I "began" to get some energy. But I
started the protein drinks then... maybe that was what helped. Anyway I'm
almost 11 weeks post op and still don't have much "extra" energy.
It takes awhile sometimes. Maybe if my surgery had'nt been the Open...
maybe I would feel stronger.

Hello, my local surgeon told me in his Scottish brogue: lassie if they put
you under and didn't cut you open you'd still have a 6 week recovery
period, because that's at least how long it takes for the anesthesia to
work its way out of you". Hang in there, hope this helps, best
regards~

Try and do a little exercise even if you feel very tired. By this I mean
to talk a short walk several times a day, even if it is only to the end of
the driveway and back. Try going just a few more steps each time. And I
really mean only a few steps. I know this is the last thing you feel like
doing. But, the more active you are, the better you will feel and the
quicker your energy will come back. Enlist the help of a spouse,
significant other, friend or neighbor to go with you. Tell them to not let
you "bail out". At first this will only take a few minutes, but
over time the amount you can do will increase and you will feel much
better.

9 DAYS?! YOU JUST HAD MAJOR SURGERY. YOUR DOCTORS MUST HAVE TOLD YOU YOU
WOULD FEEL LIKE THIS. I DID FOR QUITE A WHILE AFTER. GIVE YOURSELF THE TIME
TO REST. YOU ARE STILL HEALING. PLEASE TRY TO BE PATIENT WITH YOURSELF. YOU
NEED TO DO WHAT YOUR BODY "TELLS" YOU. IF YOU ARE TIRED, THEN
REST. IF YOU FEEL FULL DON'T EAT OR DRINK. YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO TRAIN
YOURSELF TO REALLY "LISTEN" TO YOUR BODY.

9 days-WOW. I can relate. I went to a Cub Scout event on day 10 but I only
sat under a tree. Your body has just had major surgery and needs time to
heal! It takes on average 1 week for every hour you were under surgery.
That's just about what it took me-7 weeks. Your energy will return but be
nice to yourself and allow yourself to rest. Congrats and best wishes
