Question:
Is slim fast considered a good source of protein?
I have the worse gag-reflex. I cannot drink any of those protein drinks. One thing that I have noticed I can drink is the coffee flavored slim shake? Is this a bad choice? How is the protein Content? — [Anonymous] (posted on June 23, 2001)

Hi. I'm a new post-op so I am no expert. But also I checked out the Slim
Fast but didn't buy it because it was high in sugar. I'm an RNY so I avoid
sugar as best as I can. As far as protein content, I forgot how much was in
it, but as soon as I saw the sugar, I left it on the shelf.

I am post op from 11/00 and have lost 83#. slim fast has 15 gms of protein
per serving and 170 cals, 25 gms of carbohydrates. the protein is good but
the overall product is not. carbohydrates make you have the dumping
syndrome. so a better product would be carbsolutions, which has 19 gms of
protein per serving, 120 cals, 2gms of carbohydrates. it takes good and
mixes well with water and crystal lite juices. I get mine at walmart for
$9 a 14oz can. hope this helps.

sorry for the misspelling... carbsolutions tastes good. also another
product, protein 95 has 24 gms of protein per serving, 100 calories, 0
carbohydrates. the protein is a soy mix which is the best type of protein.
this product mixes well with water. however, does not taste well. I have
to mix this with crystal lite, the carbsolutions (1 scoop), and a package
of splenda sugar-substitute. when I mix it this way I get 160 cals, 33
grams of protein, and 2 grams of carbohydrates per 8 oz serving. hope this
helps.

Slim Fast is great in protein, but a definite no-no in the carb department.
I've been advised not to take anything over 18gr and only half of those
grams can be sugar grams. I agree, the cappucino flavored slim fast is
great, but it could make you dump. I too have a hard time with the protein
drinks. I am one month post-op. Vitalady sells some protein drinks that
mix well with kool aid and crystal light, they are fruit punch and grape
flavor. I ended up going with the chocolate peanut butter cup flavor and
just do that in 4 oz of water. I bought her protein bars (choc. hazelnut
toffee crunch) that has 22gr protein and 2.5gr of carbs and it is pretty
good. Way better than drinking those drinks. The bars are smooth and go
down pretty easy if you nibble on them. Hope you find something that will
work for you. :-)

I'm 10 weeks post op Lap/Rny proximal and have used Slim Fast as a source
of protein with my nutritionist's blessing. Although it is on the high side
in carbs and sugars, it also contains protein and lots of vital nutrients
and vitamins. My nutritionist advises not to use Slim Fast as a constant
meal replacement, but used in moderation is fine. I have not dumped from
drinking it.

My Dr. is telling to go with the Carnation Breakfast mix. It does have a
good taste, they have no sugar, and are suppost to be a good source of
protein. Anyone else drinking this?

There are three major reasons I wouldn't use SlimFast as a protein drink:
1) It is VERY low in protein. I drink Zero Carb Isopure which is an
already-made, 20 ounce bottle of flavored water... the one I drink the most
is grape (it tastes like grape koolaid!), but some GNCs sell the rest of
the (very good!) flavors. You can also buy Isopure at this website:
http://store.yahoo.com/worldclassnutrition/readtodrinis.html
This Isopure has 40 grams of protein, no carbs, no sugar, and is only 160
calories... it is also aspartame-free (no NutraSweet). It tastes
delicious, too!
2) It is VERY high in sugar. I dump with anything more than 4 grams of
sugar per serving. Also, sugar is empty calories... who needs them?
3) SlimFast is a DIET food and I had this surgery so that I never had to
go on a diet again for the rest of my life! Who wants to still be in the
diet mentality post-op? Certainly not me!
Carb Solutions is a decent alternative, but, unfortunately, since surgery,
I have become lactose intolerant and can't do the Carb Solutions... even
with soy milk (soy milk has too much sugar in it). I'm thrilled I found
the Isopure!
Good luck!

I have a can of SF in my fridge that I use as a demo of no-no products. It
has the same sugar content as real Coke. There are gazillions of high
protein, low "damage" products on the market, including a mocha
cappuccino. The point is to expedite your wt loss, and try to determine
that what you are losing is FAT, not muscle or bone mass. There's only so
much WE can do to control that, but we have to work at understand what will
bring the wt back on or stop the wt loss & what will enhance the wt
loss, short term & long term. Protein supps that are low in sugar
(high protein) that are not mixed with high sugar liquids (like milk or
juice), will push the wt off and keep it off. High sugar drinks will
frustrate you to tears.

My advice - go slow - and don't take anyone else's word for what
"tastes great"!
I was trying to find the best protein drink - read so many people's opinion
(and that's all it is - THEIR opinion) that ISOPURE is the answer to all
your problems! "It's delicious and tastes just like Kool-Aid".
So, my husband went to GNC, bought a half-dozen bottles, I took one drink
and immediately started vomiting.
It is, (in my opinion), the NASTIEST stuff I ever tasted. Tastes like pure
chemicals with a horrible aftertaste. I tried a couple of other flavors,
same problem. My husband and four teenage-almost teenage children tried
some and they all gagged and spit it out.
It reminds me of that nightmare stuff you have to drink before you have a
CT Scan....it is just disgusting!
Anyway - all this to say - just get a sample before you invest in a lot of
stuff......
