Question:
How does the surgeon know how much of the intestine to bypass?

I have heard so much about proximal, media and distal. HOw does the surgeon know how much of the intestine to bypass? Does bypassing more which would create more malabsorption aid in more weight loss?    — Jennifer L. (posted on June 14, 2001)

My surgeon bypasses the same amount of intestine for all of his patients no matter what their beginning weight - 18 inches. He's been doing this for a while and said he finds with that length bypassed he sees the most optimal weight loss with the least amount of mal-absorption problems.

My surgeon says he normally does 30 cm but if your BMI is 50+ he bypasses 120 cm, says that there is more and faster weight loss with that.
