Question:

was anyone at a starting weight of 220 or so? How fast did you loose the weight? What are you at now? — Jennifer L. (posted on June 2, 2001)

I started at 252 lbs. I had my surgery Jan 29th, so approx.
4 mos ago and I am at 200 lbs. I had a VGB open and my doctor
said I would loose weight a littler slower with this surgery
because you don't have the dumping and such. But I walk every
day and I am very happy with my loss as well as the doctor.

I had RNY open on Jan. 8, 2001 and I'm down 62 lbs. I hate to say this, I
haven't exercised like I should and I've still lost weight, BUT things are
hanging (like arms, boobs, rear)...so exercise!

I've lost 34lbs in ten weeks, and the doctor said I'm right on target for
starting at 221. A little slower than I thought it'd be, but steady, with
no flappy skin.

I began my WLS journey in Jan 2001 weighing in at 252 (I am 5' tall). By
surgery date of 4/10 I had lost 32 pounds on my own following the practice
diet and exercising. So, on surgery date I was 220. I am almost 8 weeks
post-op and am definately losing much slower than many. I am down 27
pounds. I know I am getting my 60 + grams of protein and drinking plenty of
water along with exercising 4-5 days weekly, so those can't be the reason
for my slow loss. On the other hand, I have noticed a big loss of inches
and am down two sizes! I do believe that if you start smaller you will lose
weight slower. I guess we all have to learn patience...I know I need to
work on it! Good luck!

I started at 215 and I am 5'3". 18 months later I weigh 145 and wear a
size 10. My weight loss stopped about 6 months ago, but I don't exercise
the way I should because of my work schedule. However, at 51 years old I am
healthy and more energetic than I was at 35. I feel blessed. I do believe
that dedication to protein, exercise and water can increase your weight
loss significantly at any starting weight and yes, your body will look for
a comfortable weight to hang on to. It's not about being
"skinny"; it's about being healthy and feeling good about
yourself.

I was 250 when I had my open RNY on March 15th, 2001. Now, almost 11 weeks
later i've lost about 32 lbs. I'm disappointed. I do follow my doc's
advise re: exercise and eating and he says I loose about 3 pounds a week
and level off at about 140 pounds. I feel as good as my old pre-op self
stamina wise and it seems like the surgery was a long time ago. I ask
myself, "Is this WLS going to fail me as sooooooooooooo many diets
have?". I could use some words of encouragement. I went through all
the insurance crap, pain and suffering from the surgery, etc. and I'm still
FAT!

I started at 230. I lost 100 pounds in 11 1/2 months. I have
been stable at 130-134 for about 6 months now. I went from a
size 20-22 to a size 6. I'm loving it. Lou Ann

One more! I am 5'2" and started at 238. Surgery (lap RNY)was on May
15, 2001 and 3 weeks later I have lost exactly 20 pounds. It seems slower
than what we sometimes read, but, HEY! that is 25% of what I want to lose!
WOW! It helps to look at the percentage and not the total pounds when you
are starting on the "small" side for WLS. It was definitely worth
it to me, and I am so excited. I think it is more critical for us to follow
instructions. I follow the nutritionist's plan to the letter, and walk a
bit each day. I will increase exercise as I get farther post-op. We are so
lucky to be able to have this surgery now and not 50 or a hundred pounds
from now. Go for it!
