Question:
I received my hospital approval letter and it says I am approved for 1 day
Has anyone received something similar? I can't imagine having the surgery and going home the same day! Could it possibly be reviewed on a day by day basis? Just wanted to know if this was something common. Please let me know what I should do — kristen H. (posted on June 2, 2001)

I had Lap RNY 7 weeks ago (4/13/01) and was in the hospital Friday thru
Monday. There is no way I would have been able to leave on the first or
second day. The earliest I would have felt well enough to leave would have
been on Sunday (day 3) but absolutely no sooner (and that would have been a
stretch). On day four I was ready to go home. I suggest you ask your
surgeon's office about this. When I got my approval from my insurance
company no amount or limit on the number of days was mentioned. You can
also call your insurance company for clarification. Good luck.

I got my insurance approval letter last week and it was approved for 3 days
hospital stay (open rny). That's just the initial approval. My doctor
said 4 days. Keep in mind that if your doctor says you need to stay 4 days
- then you stay 4 days. I wouldn't worry about. I'm almost positive that
it goes by what your doctor deems medically prudent for you.

I work in a Doctors office and do all the precertifications for surgery.
Alot of insurance companies only certify the bare minimum amount of time.
That is not to say, times up you go home. The insurance company will be in
contact with the hospital & Dr., and if it is medically necessary, you
stay. Please don't stress. I had my surgery in 10/00 and was approved for 2
days, I ended up staying 4. If you are not ready to go, you won't. Good
luck
