Yes, it can be prevented. My nutritionist told me to take 1 prenatal and 1
calcium citrate tablet in the morning and 1 calcium citrate at night and
this should help to prevent osteoporosis. This should only be done after
about 1-1 1/2 months after surgery, when you are able to swallow. After
the surgery, you need to be taking a children's chewable vitamin
(sugar-free) twice daily until you can handle the larger pills. There is a
website that offers chewable multivitamins and calcium. It is
www.sugarfreemarketplace.com Hope that I could help you. your WLS friend,

One hopes it can be avoided. Too late for some of us. We know that Tums or
Viactiv or other forms of carbonate do NOT work. The only thing we think
MIGHT work is calcium citrate + D + magnesium. 1500-2000mg per day. We
are very high risk for it, added to whatever risks you already had going.
But the massive wt loss combined with the inability to absorb calcium via
food or carbonates increases our risk tremendously. So, pay attention to
what you're taking and how much of it. Calcium prefers to be with something
on the tummy, no more than 500mg at one time, and it prefers later in the
day.
