Question:
IS IT NORMAL TO BE ABLE TO EAT A FULL CAN OF SOUP AT 4 WKS POST OP?
I had an open RNY on 3/8/01 and this last week I can eat a full can of soup in a sitting. Have I stretched my pouch? I thought I should be able to eat maybe 2-4 oz in a sitting? I wonder if I messed myself up and am worried. — Patricia H. (posted on April 2, 2001)

Hi Patricia, Most soups are mostly liquid, so it is probably moving right
on through therefore not effecting your pouch at all. You should be able to
count broth type soups as a portion of your liquid intake. If you are
eating really thick soups, than be more careful, watch your fat and sugar
intake. You can't stretch your pouch with liquids. When you start solids
you might want to measure your portions until you can learn how to
determine the proper amounts you should have. I hope this helps!!

I was able to eat a whole can of Yental soup yesterday. My surgery was
3-7-01. However, I can't eat but a couple of bites of my egg every
morning. I think it is the consistency that matters. If it can slid
through, you can eat more. That is why you have to be careful about high
calorie stuff (like shakes or icecream) that can go through easily. This
is one of the most common ways that people gain weight after this surgery,
or at least don't lose the amount of weight that they think they should.
Good health to you.
