Question:
Do you have trouble drinking early post-op?
I JUST HAD A LAP RNY DONE 1/22/2001. I'M HAVING A LOT OF TROUBLE WITH DRINKING. I WANTED TO KNOW IF ANYONE HAS HAD A PROBLEM LIKE MINE. IT'S BEEN ABOUT 12 DAYS SINCE SURGERY, I'M ONLY DRINKING ABOUT 10 OZ. OF CLEAR LIQUIDS AND 4 OZ OF FULL LIQUIDS A DAY. THIS GIVES ME TERRIBLE BELCHING, GASTRIC DISTURBANCES, SORENESS IN STOMACH. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS IS NORMAL? I'M WORRIED ABOUT DEHYDRATION AND LACK OF PROTEIN. I ALSO HAVE A FOUL SMELL THAT I BELCH UP. COULD THIS BE FROM THE ANESTHESIA (I WAS IN SURGERY 4.5 HOURS) COMING OUT OF MY SYSTEM. HELP--I'M REALLY GETTING WORRIED. — T. Marie J. (posted on February 3, 2001)

Hi Tina, you didn't say what type of surgery you had. So I can tell you I
had RNY . Do not drink from a straw because this causes you to swallow
air. Stay away from all carbonated beverages until fully healed. Some can
drink them at a this point and some not. Now get a 64 ounce jug and fill
it with water. One cup at a time sip , sip, sip,. Never take a gulp, or
you will hurt and have gas. YOu eat, wait a half hour before liquids, and
then sip, sip , sip, continuously until your next meal. Your water bottle
or cup must be attached to you. No matter where you are. Love and hugs.

Wow, it is 5:00 am , disregard the part where I said you didn't state what
kind of surgery. Gee, maybe I should sleep at night. I don't need much
rest now. I have so much energy. Good luck. LOL on me Carin

14 oz a day isn't going to cut it. You'll need to be seen first thing
Monday. I'm sure you'd rather see your own doc than some ER doc, so please
call first thing and get an appt. There are mechanical failures we can have
at first, and the fix is very simple. But it won't make life easier to
dehydrate first.
