Yes! Many people have had the bpd without DS. The BPD was the first
version of the surgery; the DS came later. The BPD has a 22 year history,
the DS, about 14 years. The DS was developed for better absorbption of
nutrients and in the US, the DS has just about replaced the BPD. I believe
there is still a surgeon or two in the US performing the BPD, and then is
Europe, as well. But, most have "switched" over to the DS.
There are many BPD patients out there who are doing very, very well! There
is a mailing list you may want to check out called, BPD_Alums for postop
BPD patients. There are also websites. You can check out all these
resources addresses here: http://www.mywls.com/Compare/BPD/bpd.html. Good
luck to you!! --->>
