Question:
What would an RNY in Canada cost for a US citizen?

I am considering going to Canada to have RNY done. I would like to know if anyone else has traveled from the the States to Canada? And if so does anyone know how much it costs to have RNY in Canada? I would appreciate any information that can provide.    — tinarochester (posted on January 11, 2001)

In Canada this procedure is currently under attack by the government. One of the hospitals in Vancouver has had this surgery removed from it's list of procedures. That means that pending further consideration there will be no more bariatric surgeries performed at this particular hospital. In addition to this bariatric surgery is seen as an elective surgery rather that an emergency surgery and that creates huge wait lists. One of the only doctors I know of in BC that does the surgery has an upwards of two year wait. You could go to canada but it won't do you any good. We don't have a two tier medical system there. That means that no amount of money will buy you surgery time in an OR in Canada. Here in the states you could buy your time in the OR, but in Canada everyone has an equal opportunity to the OR wether or not the patient can pay. You'd be better off to just do it here. Good luck.
