Yes, I think it is common. I have heard of several people having weight
loss surgery, ended up losing their spleen in the process. I don't think
the gall bladder removal is related to the spleed removal.

I believe depending on your internal structure it might be highly likely to
nick the spleen and have it removed. I was told flat out by my surgeon
that if your insides are full of adhesions from prior procedures it is very
difficult to get everything separated and still in tack. Usually the
spleen is the organ that gets nicked and removed. As many on this sight
have talked about in the past removal of the Gallbladder is between you and
the surgeon. If I would have had mine removed with the first Stapling, I
would have avoided reentery operation to remove it, thus making my revison
more difficult. I think each case is different and you and your surgeon
must decide what is best for you.

Having an injury to your spleen is a known complication of any surgery
involving your upper abdominal area, especially in larger people and your
surgeon should have mentioned this to you as a risk. Unfortunately, once
it is nicked, it is hard to repair and ends up being removed. As for your
gallbladder, good riddance I say as it isn't something you need and often
people with rapid wt loss develop gallbladder disease and have to have it
removed later.

My doctor also 'knicked' my spleen. He acted like it was no big deal to
remove it. I am 3 months post-op and have caught every bug that has went
around. I am just now feeling normal. Does anyone know if i I have any
legal recourse?
