Question:
A question about preop and post op foods

I have a question about lite and sugar free yogurts. I have tried several brands and all the ones I've tried have bits or nickle size pieces of fruit in them. I know that post op you can have yogurt and I would like to know what you do about the fruit pieces. Is it alright to blend them down or should I strain them out before eating? Also, I've read that eating baby food is ok after surgery, but when I read the lables there is tons of sugar in baby food fruits. Is there enough sugar in there to cause dumping? Now for the pre op question... The day before surgery the surgeon I'm going to says to have all liquids, does that include creamed soups made with 1% milk and also, since puddings are considered liquids post op are they also considered that the day before surgery also? Thanks!    — k K. (posted on September 18, 2000)

I'd also suggest you check with your surgeon's office for your questions. With that in mind, I'll tell you what I was told. I could not use the yogurts with fruit pieces - there are some without such as banana cream pie, lemon, cappucino. This only lasted for a few days before I could get past the pureed section. I had open RNY, and I ate baby food bananas without dumping. Others may react differently. (we're talking natural sugar that's already in the bananas, not added sugar). Only your surgeon can tell you what he means by all liquids the day before surgery. Creamed soups and puddings are not considered "clear liquids", but rather 'full liquids.'

My nutritionist told me not to eat baby food because of the high sugar and carb counts. Baby foods are meant to add calories to babies' diets.

There is no "sugar free" yogurt, only low sugar yogurt and it is still rather high in sugar. Baby food is like milk, intended to put weight ON babies, so also high in sugar. The little fruits are not ALL that high in suagr, they (alone) won't make you dump, but added to your already high sugar intake (milk, yogurt, baby food), they coud make you dump and will certainly slow your wt loss.

As for yogurt on a post-op basis, I say that anything that will help you get through the first 4 to 6 week period is OK. The Yoplait yogurt with the blue lid will not make you dump; you won't be able to eat all of a container in one sitting, but it is an option during a time when you have limited choices. As for the full v. clear liquid pre-op day, check with your surgeon's office. Mine required full liquids 2 days before surgery and clear liquids the day before surgery. The distinction is very important, so be sure to check. And congrats, you're on your way!

Hi, just saw your profile update with the upsetting denial news. So sorry! Don't let this one go, it's obviously a covered procedure and it sounds as if the medical community is behind you on this. Keep fighting!
