Question:
What can my family purchase me for my B-day for surger and post-op?
My birthday is this thursday and my family wants to buy me something to help me with fixing food for after I get home, and suggestions? I don't have a surgery date yet but have my consult with the surgeon next thurday!!! Hugs — Tennille (posted on August 20, 2000)

I love this question! Here's my suggestions: Down pillows, a cozy
chennile robe & pair of Reebok DMX walking shoes! Good Luck with your
recovery!

Hi. I love this question too. My best friend gave me a few very practical
gifts before my surgery too. My birthday was only 6 days past my surgery
date and believe me they came in very handy when I got home from the
hospital. The best gift she gave me was the hand blender that was
mentioned in the previous posting. I used that from day one after I came
home. She also gave me several new pillows to help "prop" me up
as well a two very "roomy" caftans that I am able to still wear.
Might I suggest a "goody bag" of non-perishables that you can put
in your cupboard in preparation for your immediate pre-op diet. Include a
variety of sugar-free drink mixes (crystal-lite, sf kool-aid), canned
refried beans, soups, sf jello and puddings, protein shake mixes, etc...
If you don't have a regular blender, now is the time to get one. The hand
blender is great for puree-ing smaller amounts of foods but the regular
blender is good for mixing and "fluffing" your protien shakes. A
mini-food processer isn't terribly expensive and is also quite handy at
preparing smaller amounts of foods. Good luck at your initial consult. I
hope this birthday will be a great one. cj

Well my surgery is September 22 and my Birthday is October 5. I will be
having an early Birthday celebration and my family is planning on
purchasing gift certificates for me to use after I lose some weight. I
thought that would be very helpful to me in the near future.

A few other ideas: I loved my wedge pillow, it sure made sleeping in a
regular bed easier for me. When I was first starting to eat real food
again, it seemed that all my food was cold before I could eat it, so my
mother got me a food warming dish (like babies use!) and it really DID
help! I agree with the other ideas, especially the caftan PLUS a good pair
of comfortable slippers with tread for hospital hall walking. Another idea
is a good food counts book. You will want to be watching your protein
amounts especially. Good luck to you and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

A blender for protein drinks and a cuisinart mini-prep chopper to puree
your food. Happy birthday.

A few ideas - a food steamer, flexible shower nozzle for after surgery (I
found it invaluable), clothing gift certificates (which you won't use
immediately, but you will soon:)), gift certificate to the health food
store you plan on buying your protein and vitamin supplements from, or a
recliner chair (if you don't already have one for sleeping). Enjoy!!!

I know it has been a long time since your original question but I just
looked at it and the responses so I guess it is never to late to post
ideas. I asked that some of my family members and friends skip the flowers
and buy me a good digital scale and hand held blender. I bought the
nighties and extra pillows myself. I think thin people weigh themselves all
the time but us fatties avoid that, this time around I will keep on top of
it literally. Good Luck.
