Question:
proximal or distal???? Which is better

I have heard so much about both, which is better? — Tennille (posted on August 3, 2000)

I'm extremely distal. I am completely dependent upon supplements for weight maintenance and good health. But I don't mind. To me, it's a fair trade off for 100% wt loss. I don't diet or count calories. I only count protein supplement grams IN, sugar grams OUT. But a distal is NOT for everyone, by any means. No way, no how. And again, the terms don't mean the same thing to any two doctors. I am far more distal than most docs even would do that they call a distal. And a proximal has about a 12 FOOT span of difference, depending on the doc who's talking. You need find out how many inches (or cm) will be bypassed OR how much will be left (in use) in the common channel.

Michelle bring up a very good point. Each doctor seems to have his own concept of what is proximal, what is distal. I had a procedure called the Duodenal Switch which left me with a 75cm common track. This would be a very distal procedure. The difference with mine is the stomach portion that leaves the stomach functioning as normal, so I get the absorbtion of vitamins & minerals in my stomach (no pouch). Lots to research, I know! To read my story go to: My Home Page. To read more about the "Switch", go to: Duodenal Switch Information Zone.
