Question:
Recliner chair necessary for Lap RNY?
I'm having a Lap RNY June 21. Wondering if a recliner chair is really necessary for lap patients after surgery or mostly just for open surgeries? Thank you. — Denise K. (posted on June 4, 2000)

Following my lap RNY in March, I found that a recliner was nice for short
periods during the day, but not necessary...good thing, as my husband was
usually in it(LOL). Sometimes it's actually harder getting in and out of
the recliner than a regular chair or firm sofa. It was helpful for the
first few nights to use 2 pillows (maybe even 3). Your upper abdominal
wall is going to be pretty tender at first and you'll have a natural
tendency to avoid stretching out flat, so it will feel better initially to
elevate your upper body. Also, patients with respiratory problems have less
difficulty in an elevated position. If that is not an issue for you, I
would suggest that you try to "wean" yourself from those extra
pillows and work back toward a "horizontal" position as soon as
comfort will allow. The quicker you began to stretch those muscles out,
the less discomfort you will have in the long run. I didn't say it would
be easy...just a word of advice. My daughter and I both had this surgery
this year and this worked for us. Best of luck!

Hey Denise:
I had LAP RNY and we already had a recliner. I used it during the day, but
never needed it at night. I did use about 3-4 pillows and used them for
some time. I was very uncomfortable lying flat for a few months. I always
thought I would stretch something inside too far. The feeling finally
left. I am now 8 months post op and can lay flat just fine. My discomfort
was only from the inside and I wouldn't call it pain--just discomfort.
Good Luck!
