Question:
My surgeon says not to drink cold drinks or ice water? WHY?
I love to drink cold drinks and my surgeon says no ice water or cold drinks? what effect will this have on me? I am a few months post-op. — [Anonymous] (posted on April 30, 2000)

That's interesting.. I read somewhere that ice cold beverages could actually help with
weight loss... after we drink it our metabolism has to work to get the ice
cold drink to room temperature (so
it won't shock, or freeze, the system I think).. therefore, our metabolism
is working overtime... that in turn helps with weight loss... I would ask
your doc to explain his comment to you... Take Care and Good Luck....

Our doc asks us to refrain furing the first 30 days just beause it can
irritate that tiny new tummy. But after that, it's trial and error on this
subject. I can't see why you'd avoid it after that initial "break in
period". Did he say why? Can you ask?

I read once that ice cold drinks
stimulate hunger. Maybe this is his thinking, too. Ask him!

I have not heard anyting about cold
water but my surgeon told me that drinking carbonated drinks will increase
gas in the pouch causing it to expand more than it should. Hope this helps!

I know that some people can get ill feeling after drinking cold icey water for the first few weeks
after surgery. My aunt had this surgery three months prior to mine in
October last year, she could not drink ice water for the first few weeks,
she would get very sick feeling; on the other hand... I did not have any
issues with ice water; if it wasn't for the ice water in the beginning I
doubt I would have drank the water I was suppose to drink; to me ice water
tastes better. Ice water also helps burn calories; my trainer at my gym
says that you burn calories when you drink ice water; this is because you
body has to heat the water up before digesting it. However, after telling
you all this... I would still recommend quesitoning your dr. and following
his advice. Good luck! :-)
