Question:
I have a foul odor around the top of my incision.
I have tried cleaning it with perxiode and it helps for a while then returns. I think it's the protein at the incision site. Any suggestions to help this smell go away. — ann A. (posted on April 29, 2000)

Ann, call your surgeon immediately. A foul odor is usually indicative of an
infection at the site. Is the incision painful or reddened as well? Don't
let this wait, you need to see your Dr. as soon as possible. Good luck,

An odor can be a sign of infection. Peroxide is not a safe product to use
as it has been proven to that it is toxic to healthy tissue. Do you have a
redness or itching in this area?
Please go and see your doctor. You could have an abscess.
Rather then using a caustic product such as peroxide, instead clean your
incision with an antibacterial soap, such as dial. Be sure to rinse
thoroughly. of course check with your doctor first.
Good Luck,
Sue

Danger, Will Robinson! (arms flailing...LOL!) A foul odor can indicate an
infection. Also, just as an aside, peroxide can actually inhibit the
healing process. Normal saline is a better choice, IMHO, for cleaning a
wound. Please contact your surgeon as soon as possible. Jaye Carl, RN,
