Question:
Did your doctor tell you, that you had to eat a high fat diet?
Melanie M. I was never under the impression that your doctor told you that you had to eat a high fat diet. I was under the impression that you were told to eat a regular diet of all types of food in small quantities. I really appreciate all the wonderful facts and clinical results you have shared with me, by showing me the urls to find the facts I have definately decided to have the duodenalswitch procedure. My consult is in April with Dr. Anthone. I am so excited. Thank you to all the family on the duodenalswitch list. Melanie K. — spankywoman (posted on March 10, 2000)

My surgeon said to eat a diet high in protein and not to worry about the
fat. Avoid sugar. But I have tried to mostly follow high protein low fat
because i have gotten used to the taste.

Melanie K., as you know, Dr. Anthone was my surgeon too. He's so
wonderful! His specific post-op eating instructions were, "Eat
whatever you want," and I do! Here's my food list from yesterday:
Breakfast - Hanson's Protein Pickup (bananas, pineapple juice, coconut milk
and a whole lot of protein powder - about 240 calories, but 100 from fat,
so I get to ignore those - hee hee hee). For lunch I went to a salad bar
and had a salad with lettuce, kidney beans, eggs, cheese, raisins,
sunflower seeds and ranch dressing. Then I had some fruit salad. Yummy.
For dinner, I had Persian food - borani (eggplant, yogurt and mint),
fesenjen (stew made from walnuts and pomegranate juice), gormeh sabzi (stew
made with lamb, kidney beans, spinach and dried limes), shish kabob and
rice, with Persian ice cream for desert (saffron and rosewater ice cream -
my favorite). I just weighed myself, and I lost two pounds sometime
between Thursday night and this morning. So you really can eat fats, if
you want... you may get some gas, but you will quickly discover how much is
"too much". I don't seem to have a problem with fats and gas
(although milk and gas is another story... yuck). Disclaimer: I had the
BPD/DS - other surgery types may not be able to eat the same foods and
quantities. Always follow your doctor's instructions when making food
choices.
