Question:
Any other post ops find that they become less tolerant to cold weather?

This is my first winter as a post op and I am finding that I CANNOT stay warm!! When I was heavier the heat in the winter used to drive me crazy because I would sweat all the time. Now, I cannot seem to stay warm. Have any other post op's experienced this shift in intolerance to cold weather? Thank you all...Have a Happy Holiday =)    — Marni (posted on December 23, 1999)

Marni, I too am having problems with the cold. My family and friends are having a ball, because I use to be the one who was always hot and now I am forever cold. I have learned to just layer my clothes when I am home or even when I am out. This way if I do warm up i can take something small off. Hope this helps.

Hi Marni: Ever since I was pregnant with my first child (9yrs ago), I have been hot. My husband loved it because we were finally enjoying the house/bedroom at the same temp. NOW I get very cold--fast. And I live in a very mild climate. I don't know what I'll do if we ever move to the cold again. I LOVE IT THOUGH!!! Thanks for the post.

Your not alone in the cold! While I am at work I have to use a space heater all day. By the time I get home, I get colder and colder as the day goes by. I smother my husband with blankets everynight because I am so cold. I take medicine for my thyroid so I know its not that, I eat good, take vitamins, exercise and I can't think of anyhting that would cause this problem. I go back to the doctor on 12/30 I will add this to my list of questions. Merry Christmas! Kim Anson

Hi Marni: Of course you're feeling the cold more! For one thing, your 'insulation' isn't there like it used to be. And, the amount of fat you take in via your diet has decreased, which contributes to your feeling colder. Enjoy it! As my doc said ... you don't have as much insulation anymore! So you're going to be colder in cold weather AND cooler in warm weather too!!! :) There is a plus side!

I think some of the cold is due to the much smaller volume of food that we intake. I think that the lower intake must decrease our metabolism some. The first time I noticed was when I was 2 weeks post op and getting only about 400 calories in. It was 75 degrees and I was freezing!!! I was wearing layers as this was in november and during hunting season so I was wearing fall clothes!! It couldn't have been due to less insulation as I had only lost about 20 lbs by then and was still 260!!! I used to drip sweat at work and now I wear a turtleneck under my nursing uniforms, and a sweater on top. LOL ~:o)

Hi, I recently found out that I am insulin resistant and that due to this my hormones fluctuate in a manner that kind of causes hot flashes. I have been this way since I started to gain weight about ten years ago. I believe that is reason that many of us are hot all the time. My doc says this will go undiagnosed for many obese patients and that you are not cold intolerant now just normal!!! LOL :) PAige

Marni, Welcome to the world of "normal" people! I am a little over 9 months post-op, and my husband is elated! I used to "freeze" him out at night in the dead of winter because I was always roasting! Now I cannot keep warm! I used to wear satin nightgowns, but if I do now, I wear long-johns under them! It's amazing how insulated we are when we are carrying around over 100 lbs too much! I never even used to own a coat. Didn't need one. Now I don't leave home without one. You are not abnormal at all hon, none of us are, we just didn't know what we were missing! Good luck to you on your continued weight loss, and I hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

i found this too. i was talking to one of my drs and he said that the anestesia affects your thermometer in your brain. you will feel colder because of it. you know, you are also colder because we have less insulation now. enjoy!!!!julie
