Hi there ....
Have you tried Designer Protein ... sold at GNC stores? It really is
excellent, and the way I make it is even better. Take two scoops of the
protein powder (chocolate is what I like) in 8 ounces of milk and 5 ice
cubes .... put into a blender and you wind up with an excellent chocolate
shake! Each scoop of protein powder carries 17 grams of protein. Check
with your Doctor ... mine said it is fine to use.

When I asked my doctor why i had become lactose intolerant, he said that it
wasn't the milk, but the fat in the milk that was making me sick. if you
are mixing your protein shake with milk, this my be the case with you as
well. he told me that it was better to get protein from vegetable sources
rather than meats because they were easier to digest. i read that green
leafy vegetables are good for protein. you might want to try skim milk and
leafy vegetables.

It depends on what kind of procdure you have. Protein is ideally absorbed
in the first 12-18" of intestien right outside the stomach. Even the
smallest bypass (RNY) usually bypasses that area. You CAN absorb elsewhere
in the intestine, but that's just the easiest absorption. So, the
supplements are predigested, so they're alerady "ready" to be
absorbed by the time you get 'em into you. Foods are not as easily
absorbed and trying to get enough bulk in to reach 60g a day can be trying,
too. Which brands have you tried? There are LOTS of good ones out here.
Easy to mix, smooth, pleasant to taste and versatile!

Speaking for RNY gastric bypass, there is no need for commercial protein
drinks, I prefer that the patients eat real food and avoid high protein
drinks. Eggs, meat, yogurt, tofu, fish are all good sources of protein.
High protein drinks lead patients to the high calorie drink habit which
comprimises the weight loss, which after all, is the whole point of the
surgery. Distal bypasses and/or duodenal switch operation patients may
have special needs so these remarks are not meant for them.

Yes, you can use fruits and veg instead of protein supplements but it is
hard to eat enough to keep the protein count as high as one should.
Remember, you should target for at least 60 grams protein and really try
for more like 100 grams when you are losing heavily. You want to keep the
muscle and lose the fat and that means keeping protein up. Had trouble
with most of the mixes myself. Ended p using GNC's Challange Liquid
Protein. Mixes well with Crystal Lite or Diet Ginger Ale. try and find
something so use lose th fat and not the muscle. Good Luck!

It is my understanding that we can not eat enough to get in all the protein
that we need to take. Have you tried Designer Protein, I find it is pretty
good. Also there is Cheramino and Citramino that are like cough syrups.
So I am told I haven't tried these yet, but plan to purchase them real
soon. A good source to find protein drinks, etc is at a website called
www.vitalady.com. She sells both the Cheramino and Citramino. Good luck
