Question:
i'm 62, have diabetes, and am in a wheelchair because of back problems.

i'm on medicare. My lungs are compromised and i have sleep apnea. I'm scared because i'm so high risk, can't walk, and a senior citizen. I'm not sure my doctor is a licensed bariatric physician. I can't seem to sort out pros and cons.    — [Anonymous] (posted on August 2, 1999)

I think first things first would be the best approach. First find a qualified Bariatric Surgeon and consult with him to see what the best advice he has would be, then ... if he thinks you're a good candidate for the surgery ... GO FOR IT BABY!!! You've got a lotta good years left in you if you can get your quality of life back!! :) Keep us posted!

Please try an organization that can get answers for you that are correct. The group I went through is Weight For Life. You can visit their web site at: www.weight-for-life.com or call them at 1-800-789-8446. They can also refer you to a local physician. This is not an advertisement. I am not affiliated with Weight-for-Life, just a satisfied customer. They did all the work with my insurer, after I provided them with my medical records (will cost you a little to get them photocopied), and completed their survery on the history of my weight gain/loss. They may well be able to tell you where you stand right away.

Our doctor (a former ASBS prez)recently did a woman in a wheelchair. He also did a nice lady of 63. I don't think he discriminates for disabilities. That just makes him run you through more tests before he tries to save you from as much of that as possible. Consider traveling!

I am 59 and not so much younger than you. Dont give up hope! Find a bariatric surgeon in your area and contact them immediately. I am on a waiting list for a first consulation with a surgeon in Iowa, and expect to go there about November. So, look for a surgeon - via the American Association for Bariatric Surgeons - and call them. Good luck.
