Question:
How can you tell the difference between dumping and a true insulin reaction?
I'm researching WLS and this one of my biggest questions. Since I am insulin dependant, I'm sure that my insulin requirements will drop dramatically post-op, but not before some insulin reactions. And if the body will no longer tolerate sugars, how would one combat a reaction (juices don't work for me now)? — Tina J. (posted on June 23, 1999)

Goodmorning,
I too was insulin dependent, taken off of insulin two weeks prior to
surgery, told to test myself a few times a day and if the numbers got high,
to take a shot. As I told someone the other day, I have not had a shot
yet. Its been since October 1997, I am no longer considered a diabetic. I
really did not have any trouble with insulin reaction. The way to tell the
difference, I'm no doctor, but my guess is, if you eat something that is
loaded with sugar or fat ... then you feel like crap, that would be
dumping, but if your following your diet and still taking insulin and your
sugar drops, then that would be a reaction. I know they feel pretty
similar, but if you take into account what you have eaten, you should be
able to differentiate between the two.
Good Luck,
Mary Anne
