Question:
What will stop the vomiting?
My doc says it is not a stricture, my pouch is irriated and prescribed Carafate and Pepcid. I usually vomit them back up. Everything I eat or drink, I vomit back up. I am 5 weeks out and still trying to handle pureed, baby food, protein drinks, water, juice. Everything comes back up! Please, any ideas? — Kathy P. (posted on September 7, 2005)

How does he know it's not a stricture? Did you have a scope done? If you
aren't able to hold down ANYTHING then there is a problem.

What are you eating? I know some things did not agree with me at first and
i would vomit. Also, are you eating to fast, are you chewing good, are you
over eating? I am not saying that you are doing any of these things but
just something to consider.
Hope things get better soon!

At five weeks you should be keeping something down. It may not be a
stricture, but could be something else. If you cannot get an answer from
your doctor, maybe seek the advice of another. If the medication he gives
cannot stay down, it certainly can't help you either. One thing that used
to get me ALMOST to throw up was drinking or eating what little I could
faster than a snail's pace. Try really really really slow going at it and
maybe that will help you. Good luck to you. Missy

You can't keep down any fluids? How are you surviving? I can't believe
the doc is not being more aggressive in your treatment. At about 5 weeks
out I was vomiting constantly and it ended up being a herniated intestine
with adhesions that required a second surgery. Keep bugging your surgeon
until he does something. You must be severly dehydrated as well by this
time.

Hi, Kathy!
I had trouble with vomiting if i ate more than an ounce for a long time. I
am eight months out, and still have to be careful. My dietician kept
insaisting that I must not b3 getting enough water, but I could not keep it
down. I finally figured out that I have to wait at least an hour after
eating before drinking any water, and an hour after drinking any water to
eat. I also still cannot eat more than a few ounces and can only eat twice
a day. I was trying to get three meals in, but that made me throw up! I
still cannot eaat chicken or roast beef. In fact, what goes down easiest
is shrimp or lobseter, a tip I picked up on the web. I can now eat a
little bit of egg, where before it made me sick.
I think you should try eating very little nibbles and see exactly which
foods annoy you. Also space out your eating and drinking. Everyone is
different, so you have to find what works for you. (My dietician also
thought I might have a stricture, but my doctor said no).

I agree with Misty, listen to what she said. I have to eat really slow,
really really slow. Watch the clock, use an infant spoon, chew till food is
practically liquid (even cottage cheese) and then wait at least 3-4 minutes
before taking another bite. Do not drink 30 min before or after or while
you eat. . If this doesn't help, really bug your surgeon.

Another thing to try to slow down your consumption of liquids is to make
water and juice pops and just lick them. You get the fluid and it takes a
lot longer. Also slow and VERY small portions. I used a baby spoon for a
few weeks after surgery. Take it even slower than you think you should.
And only take a few bites, don't even try to finish what you think you
should. Just a few bites then put it down and see if you can hold it down.
If none of this is working and your surgeon does not get more aggressive
than you need to and find someone who will help you. Good luck.

I experienced vomitting the first 4 months after surgery.I've been scoped
about 4 times. My doctor couldn't find anything that was causing me to be
nausea and vomitting so he dilated my pouch and put me on a medication
called Remeron and I was to take it at night. And I did that for 30 days and
It did work. so maybe ask your doctor about Remeron. I was so dehydrated
from vomitting I was hospitalized about 4 times.
