Question:
How much protein your body can absorb at one time?
How much protein your body can absorb at one time? I know that I read about this before but I can't found the place now. — Vanessa @Nebraska (posted on March 8, 2005)

I have heard that 30 grams is the most (mostly from people who have also
heard). I have done research on the web and never found anything about
absorbtion.
If and when you find out let us all know!

The dietition at my bariatric center said that a professional athlete could
absorb 30-40 GMS of protein at one ingestion. A WLS patient likely would
not absorb more than 25-30. She strongly advises not making "super
shakes" with 40 or more GMS of protein--most of it would not be
utilized.Instead she suggests making shakes with 20-25 GMS of protein. How
many you drink would depend on your protein goal. Better to drink more
shakes and get all you pay for. Good luck.

Our bodies cannot absorb more than 30 grams of protein at a time. Anything
over that amount is wasted throughout the body like in urine. If you make
the shakes drink them within 30 minutes after you make it. If not letting
it sit will cause bacteria to form and will be no good to drink. Never make
more and store it cause it will not keep. I was told this before and after
I had wls by the bariatric coordinator. I do the already mixed and canned
drinks which is about 10 to 12 ounces.

My nutritionalist has never heard of only being able to absorb 30 grams
of protein at one time. It was a topic brought up at our last support group
and of the two nutrionalist there, neither of them ever heard of that.

My personal belief is that the 30 grams is one of those thing that
"everybody" knows. It has been repeated to death until many
people accept and believe it to be true, with absolutely no evidence to
back it up.

There is a lot of contreversy on this. I have ask several people (including
post-ops, nutritionists, Dr and Nurse's). There is not an exact number that
EVERYONE will absorb. It all depends on what your body NEEDS at that time.
When you first wake up, before and after exercise and before bed are when
you NEED more, therefor your body will absorb more... sorry no magic number
here however 30 is a good guideline....
