Question:
My Doctor said that if I requested Heperin before or after surgery he would give it
to me? Should I request it after my surgery? If so how soon after? I don't want it during surgery due to my Doctor said that it usually becomes more messy for the surgery procedure. Please respond my surgery is on December 14th,04. Thanks So Much! — Alice L. (posted on November 28, 2004)

My surgeon gives every patient a shot of heprin prior to having surgery to
help prevent blood clots and he also gives them after surgery in the
stomach to help prevent blood clots. I can't remember how often we got them
after surgery and it didn't hurt. But my surgeron was very concerned about
preventing blood clots. I was in the hospital for 3 days and after I went
home I did not need to receive anymore injections of heprien.

Definitely request them for after, it helps you from throwing blood clots,
a risk for anyone after surgery. I think I had them 2 or 3 times a day,
both for my gastric bypass surgery and bowel obstruction surgery 18 mos.
post-op from the RNY. As someone else said, they give them in the abdomen
and they don't hurt. I seem to remember also getting one pre-op but I am
not sure. I am surprised your surgeon doesn't do it as a regular thing.
Wishing you all the best and prayers for the 14th!

I am surprised he asked you if you wanted it... My Dr. gave it to me w/o
any question. I also received it while I was in the hospital....

First, I am alarmed that your doc does not automatically give you the
heparin. SOOOOO from a nurse....take the heparin just before surgery and
then every 8 hours while you are in the hospital. I was really scared b/c I
was not able to get the heparin because I bled out during surgery and
required blood transfusions and the whole time I was so afraid of getting a
blood clot. Just to ease your mind, tell the doc YOU WANT IT!!!! Good
luck...debbie
