Question:
Chewing Tobacco?

Does anyone know if there is a problem with chewing tobacco before WLS? I quit smoking and started "dipping". I have surgery on Sept.22, 2004.    — Dan W. (posted on September 10, 2004)

Let me be the first to say....ewww. Ok, got that over with. There are many risks to any kind of tobacco, I'm sure you are aware of that. However, the risk with smoking and surgery is that your lungs are working at less than wonderful capacity. So by you chewing instead of inhaling would probably alleaviate that issue. Tobacco of anykind will hinder the healing process simply because of the nicotine. I am learning that the hard way with my ulcers. I do smoke so don't think I'm trying to come down on you for something, I do understand the addiction. But let this kettle tell the pot to quit using tobacco because it will be better for you in the long run. :) rebecca

Other than increased risks of lip, throat, esophogeal and stomach cancers, and damage to your heart from nicotine, lessened healing after surgery, why, no, there aren't any problems with "dipping". Stop now and don't even think of doing this after surgery!

Please ask your doctor asap - I believe you're getting a lot more nicotine than by smoking. Sorry to sound preachy but this was NOT a good idea. You may be in for a lecture but that's way better than getting into real trouble with the surgery. I'm sure you can quit - and best of luck to you! Bette

Like others have posted, there are many issues with chewing tobacco, but what came to mind is that after surgery your tastes change A LOT. Lots of things really "puked me out" and still do.... now, I haven't tried chewing tobacco post op, but UGH, the thought of it sends shivers down my spine. Without judgement on what is "right and wrong" you may find that you loose taste for it post op and it might make you very nauseated. Yikes, and if you accidentally swallow, that might be very hard to stomach. Good luck with your decision and with your surgery. Plus, you are my "date pal".... I had my surgery almost one year ago - also on September 22nd. It's a lucky number!

I did three cans per week pre-op and 3 cans per week post-op. I still love when in the outdoors. michael
