Question:
To any of you that had surgery at BTC, what type did we have, proximal or distal?
I guess it all depends on how much weight we had to lose. I saw a question about it here a while ago and ever since then it's been in the back of my mind. Thanks! — Kris T. (posted on June 27, 2004)

I was told distal by my surgeon at Barix Clinics Scottsdale. He bypassed
150 cm. I asked for and received a copy of my surgery report and have it
in my personal records notebook. I believe that Dr. Terry Simpson in his
new book available on this site says that anything over 100 cm is
considered distal for INSURANCE PURPOSES. I know there is much discussion
on what exactly is proximal vs distal and the amount bypassed, etc so the
topic has a great deal of varying opinions. Sandra

I was also told proximal by my surgeon. His assistant said it was about
150 cm bypassed. But I haven't seen the surgery notes yet.

As a previous BTC nurse, the surgeons don't really consider it proximal or
distal. Usually, you have about 150cm bypassed, but it is not the same for
each patient....they actually measure the intestine once they get in there
and based on your height and weight, determine how much to bypass. At least
that is what a couple of the surgeons at BTC in Ypsilanti where I worked
told me.
