Question:
Cottage Cheese - does it need to be pureed?
I am going to be starting on pureed food in just another week. Do I need to puree cottage cheese to get rid of the lumps? — Deborah L. (posted on February 29, 2004)

Hi. You can just kind of mash it in your mouth as you eat it. Cottage
cheese is an excellent source of protein. I used the Breakstone 4 oz. four
pack and i think each one had 12g of protein. Good luck!

Deborah, I would follow you doctor's instructions on how he wants you to
consume your food, in this case the cottage cheese. If he wants it pureed
then you should do it. I had to puree my foods for the 2 weeks after my
liquid stage of my PO diet and yes it is a pain. But, there is a reason, so
the food is at its smoothest and there are no lumps that are going into
your brand new stomach. You need to give your baby stomach a chance to heal
and you should not be introducing food lumps into your healing stomach
pouch. I bought a mini food processer to puree my foods. It handles the
smaller quantities far better. I also found it easier than the blender
because the food did not get caught around the blades at the bottom. I
think that the Cuisinart one that I bought was only $20 at Target.

Your surgeon/dietician may have some specific advice, but by the time I
tried cottage cheese, maybe 3 weeks post op, if I remember correctly, I did
not puree it. I just tried to mash it really well while
"chewing" it so that it would not be lumpy. I seemed to tolerate
foods really well, so this worked for me. Take it slow, follow the advice
of your program, and do what "feels" right. Good luck to you!
