Question:
I feel like I'm 80, not 27!!! Terrible post-op joint pain. Help!!

I'm 7 months post op and have lost about 75 pounds. Suddenly this week I developed terrible joint pain (first in my wrists, then onto my ankles, neck, elbows, back, knees, shoulders, hips, EVERYWHERE!!!) They feel tight and strained and painful, and it's waking me up 3 or 4 times in the night. I never had joint pain before surgery, and I tend to think this might somehow be related to a nutritional or vitamin deficiency, but who knows. It's strange that it was such a "sudden" development, and also that it has persisted for several days with no sign of getting better. Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? Any advice would be incredibly helpful. I searched the archives and didn't really find anything conclusive. I'm 27 years old, weigh 190 and have always enjoyed pretty good health.    — Tiffany J. I would definitely see a Dr. about this... But it also sounds like you may need more calcium.... I use to get (and still do sometimes) bad leg and joint pain... Dr. told me I need to increase calcium... I did and it worked.....

Tiffany ~ I am 8 months post-op/98 pounds down and my hips ache in the middle of the night! I wake up to turn over and I can barely do it! I'm not sure why either, but I think I will take the advice and start taking more calcium.

Not to scare you but i had joint pain so bad i was almost in a wheelchair. I had the old wls known as jib and developed "blind loop syndrome" which is a very rare form of arthritis. the only cure was to get a reversal of that surgery which I refused to do for ten years but had to in 2002 because of a bowel obstruction. Lo and behold, my joint pain left. I had rny in feb, 2003 and so far so good with the joints. But be aware that a VERY RARE side effect is severe joint pain. Call your doc. Do not increase your calcuim or anything else until you talk to him. Also, this condition is extremely hard to diagnose.

I had that problem during December and January but it seems to have cleared up now. I was walking like I was 80 and it hurt to change from sitting to standing, standing to sitting, etc. I read all the posts on here that said it was normal and lo and behold, it did clear up for me. I called my doctor and he told be to go back to taking my Celebrex from pre-op days but I didn't really want to do that so used Tylenol a few times.

I had the same problem, the one thing I have found that helped was pilates class. I asked an doctor--orthopedic--about the pain, and his respond was that we lose fat in our joints too and this leaves air spaces. I can only tell you that most of my joint pain went alway at about 18 months post op. It does get better, but takes time

Tiffany---My best suggestion is to call YOUR Doctor. The message boards are great for some things---But they can't diagnose a potential problem.

Tiffany: I wouldn't fool around with this at all. Sudden onset of joint pain is not normal. Please contact your doctor immediately!
